Ever since Mark Ruffalo was starring in Thor: Ragnarok we’ve known elements from the Planet Hulk story would be included in the 2017 Marvel film but were unsure if Chris Hemsworth and Ruffalo would be battling in the arena.
However, director Taika Waititi has revealed a little bit more about the upcoming film, and it looks like they’ll be staying quite close to the original story.
Waititi has described the third Thor movie as a “comic road trip” and will take our heroes to the planet of Sakaar, which is the setting for Planet Hulk.

Waititi told Total Film (via Digital Spy) “Sakaar was just insane, far-off, futuristic place which was the biggest shift for the film and these characters.”
He went on to add the film will draw from the iconic works of Jack Kirby, who co-created with Stan Lee many of the Marvel characters like Iron Man, Fantastic Four and more, the co-creator of Thor and the Hulk himself.
To give some backstory, Sakaar is ruled by a tyrannical ruler called the Red King, who enslaved warriors and made them battle in a gladiator style arena. Hulk crash landed on this planet and he too was enslaved and made to battle, until he starts an uprising and bought the Red King’s rule to an end.
It’s just unclear how this narrative will fit with the overarching, Asgard-centric storyline. On the other hand, some promo work was released online and it had Hulk and Thor in battle armour, so my best guess is we’ll see the big, green, angry monster around the second act.
Returning to the film is Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston and they’ll be joined by newcomers Cate Blanchett as Hela, the goddess of death, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Karl Urban as Skurge, the Executioner and Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster.
