La La Land And British TV Were The Big Winners At The 2017 Golden Globes + Full List Of Motion Picture Winners


Last night (January 8) was the 74th Golden Globes and it was a great night for La La Land sweeping the film categories and breaking records.

Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the Golden Globes honoured the very best in both the world of television and movies with all the winners chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and has officially started the awards season.

The feel-good musical La La Land completely dominated the “comedy” categories and breaking a Golden Globes record winning all seven major awards in each category it was nominated.

The film picked up the Best Motion Picture, Damien Chazelle picked up the Best Director, while both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won Best Actor and Best Actress awards.

“Hope and creativity are two of the most important things in the world. That’s what this movie is about,” Stone explained during her acceptance speech.

After getting beaten by Gosling, Ryan Reynolds got himself a consolation prize.


Meanwhile, Chazelle explained why La La Land is so important to him during his Best Director acceptance speech “It’s a movie which took a long time to get off the ground and is very personal to me so it’s been that much more rewarding to it received at all.”

It wasn’t just about La La Land last night, Moonlight won Best Drama, Casey Affleck picking up the Best Drama Actor award and there was a surprise win for French actress Isabelle Huppert in the Best Drama Actress category beating Amy Adams (Arrival), Ruth Negga (Loving) and Natalie Portman (Jackie).

There were also wins for British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Viola Davis in the Best supporting actor and actress respectively.

Meryl Streep won the Cecil B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Award and the iconic actress used her acceptance speech to rip into Donald Trump.

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if you kick us all out, you’ll have nothing to watch except for football and mixed martial arts, which are not arts.”

On the TV side of things, it was a great night for British TV. The Night Manager and Netflix’s The Crown dominated the Limited and Drama series categories.

Claire Foy picked up the Best Actress award for her role of Queen Elizabeth II while The Crown won Best Drama series.

The Night Manger was also a major winner with Tom Hiddleston (Best Actor), Hugh Laurie (Best Supporting Actor) and Olivia Coleman (Best Supporting Actress) being honoured.

The Golden Globes also paid tribute to the late Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds.
