Captain Marvel Has Found Its Directors

Captain Marvel is so important to the future of Marvel Studios and the MCU that Kevin Feige had to hire TWO directors to take control.

Marvel released a statement yesterday (19th April), after Variety broke the story, to reveal Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have landed one of the biggest directing jobs in the superhero genre to helm Marvel Studios first ever female superhero film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo beat out some decent directors including Sam Taylor-Johnson, veteran TV helmer of Mad Man and Homeland Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria from New Girl.

Boden and Fleck will be pretty unknown to a lot of people, but this duo were behind dramas (with some comedy) Half Nelson – starring Ryan Gosling – and Mississippi Grind which had Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story).

I did enjoy Mississippi Grind due to the performances, Mendelsohn was superb and Reynolds was great and understated compare to his other roles. However, it was a bit too slow for me.

On the other hand, I can’t wait to see them work with an utter talent like Brie Larson in the lead and think they’ll be a lot of character moments and hopefully having these three together will have that indie/small budget feel, but in a big blockbuster.

Furthermore, because this will be a big blockbuster popcorn film, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t worried about them directing big action set-pieces because all of Marvel films, action wise, look the same. The same goes for their visuals (besides James Gunn, Scott Derrickson and by the looks of things Taika Waititi) the Marvel films all look similar.

I’ll still have faith in this film because of Larson and the screenwriters are pretty damn decent too with Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman and Oscar-nominated Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve penning the story of Carl Danvers to the big screen.

To give you an idea of what this character is about, Danvers (Larson) was an air force pilot turned secret agent and after getting human DNA mixed with alien genes from the species known as Kree. She was equipped with super-strength, flight and shoot energy bursts from her hands.

We will be introduced to Danvers in Avengers: Infinity Wars where I think she’ll get a mini origin story and get her powers. In her solo film, we’ll see her battling and figuring out who and what she is now and battle a villain called Deathbird.

My biggest hopes for this film is to be Marvel’s version of Man of Steel and if it succeeds then this will be the best film ever to come out of Marvel Studios. As Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is one of the greatest superhero films ever made and differently one of the most underrated films ever.

Captain Marvel arrives in UK cinemas in the spring of 2019.
