After the fallout from the utter crap that was the animated movie of The Killing Joke, Bruce Timm is back (hooray?) and bringing us a team-up movie of the two most popular DC characters, Batman and Harley Quinn.

Batman (Conroy) and Nightwing (Lester) are forced to team up with the Joker’s sometimes-girlfriend Harley Quinn (Rauch) to a global threat brought about by Poison Ivy (Brewster) and Jason Woodrue, the Floronic Man (Richardson).

Even though it looks like and sounds like a continuation of season four of Batman: The Animated Series with this Batman in the same Batsuit as season four, but this is not a continuation of BTAS. So if you thought this would be in line with previous films like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm or Batman: Sub Zero with added humour then this might not be for you.

It’s a mental, fun film and Melissa Rauch does a superb job as Harley. She brings more realism to the character with her voice, it also highlights the strength and humour. Rauch is the reason why this film is an enjoyable, good adventure.

Meanwhile, it’s great to hear Loren Lester’s voicing Dick Grayson once again and of course, Kevin Conroy is Batman and makes a strong showing.

Additionally, Warner Bros Animation and DC continue to knock it out of the park when it comes to this department

However, I think fans are getting sick of seeing Bruce Timm continuing sexualising our female DC characters especially after the massive fallout from The Killing Joke. This is highlighted in a scene involving a restaurant called Superbabes, it’s hooters meets female DC characters, we have a sexy Granny Goodness FFS!

I can sort of understand why Timm does this, not mainly because it’s his go to thing, he has history, but because fans of BTAS are adults now from mid-20s onwards. So this gives him more freedom in a sense, but it still feels odd.

This is Harley film with Batman as a support character and the reason why it shouldn’t be part of the continuation is that this is a flat out comedy. There are some funny one-liners and moments especially in the bar with plenty of D-list characters from Batman: The Animated Series.

This is a good film with entertaining, fun moments and I’m glad we never see the Joker and is only a brief mention so Harley is her own strong character. It’s just the actual fart jokes and some of the juvenile ruins it.

Bonus Features

The bonus features are bloody brilliant. The sneak peek at Gotham by Gaslight looks dark and awesome, The Harley Effect featurette is fascinating and interesting. While it’s great to hear about Loren Lester and him talking about the character. You also get two BTAS episodes!

Verdict

A fun, enjoyable film with Rouch as the star and awesome bonus features. Worth a buy, maybe on sale.
