When it was announced Dwayne Johnson was bringing Baywatch back for the big screen and making it an R-rated/21 Jump Street style comedy, I was interested. Then with a talented and obviously beautiful cast including Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario, the interest increased.

So is Baywatch worth buying or maybe waiting until it’s on Netflix?

When a dangerous crime wave hits the beach, Lt. Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) leads his elite squad of badass lifeguards on a mission to prove you don’t have to wear a badge to save the bay. Joined a trio of hot-shot recruits including former Olympian Matt Brody (Efron), they’ll ditch the surf and go deep undercover to take down a ruthless businesswoman Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra), whose devious plans threaten the future of the bay.

Baywatch could be easily described by one of the many hot bods or Efron’s Brody, this film is all looks and no brains.

It’s not the worst of the year bad, but it’s not good and what’s surprising it’s boring for long parts and the continuing nodding and winking does become tiresome.

What’s the biggest shame is this is a brilliant, charming cast. Johnson has become the best Hollywood star of recent years; Efron is a talented actor who could win awards if given the right role. Chopra alongside Daddario has the potential to become big Hollywood actresses.

Additionally, I feel for Jon Bass as his career for the short term will be offered “Josh Gad” type roles.

As I previously said, this isn’t the worst film this year. There are some good things about the film.

Johnson and Efron are the big main reason because of this as they have a great chemistry and they work well off each other.

There are a few laughs scattered throughout the film with the main source coming from Yahya Abdul-Mateen and had my fingers crossed he’d make an Aquaman joke.

Is Baywatch worth buying or waiting until it comes to Netflix or Amazon Prime?

Depends, if you’re a fan of watching bonus features then I’d say buy the blu-ray only when it’s on sale for under £6.

Best bet is to just wait until it’ll come available on Netflix.

Verdict

A waste of a decent cast with poor jokes in a slightly boring film. The only saving grace is the chemistry of Johnson and Efron.
