Yesterday (Monday 4th September), a rumour by a website called The Hashtag Show went around Twitter amongst the film and DCEU fans regarding the possibility that John Cena is shortlisted to possibly play Shazam!
Shazam! is currently in the midst of production with film’s director David F. Samberg currently sorting out the casting, locations, budgets and working on the script in Warner Bros’ Burbank Studios.
The helmer has taken to Instagram to let fans know he could have diabetes by the time filming begins early 2018 (probably February) or maybe when it hit theatres Spring 2019.
Samberg has revealed he’ll be using common sense and casting two actors in the role, one younger star (someone from Stranger Things or this new IT movie no doubt) to play Billy Batson and another older actor will by Baston’s superhero alter ego Shazam!
Cena has been a frontrunner of many fancasts, including mine a few years ago.
I understand it too. Cena has the personality, look and build of a superhero especially Captain Marvel (his original name before changing it). He’s loved by young WWE fans around the world and for publicity and selling merch this would be a smart choice for WB/DC to make.
Even as a wrestler, older fans have begun to respect him more in the recent few years and the obvious connection would be a rematch of the rematch of the once in a lifetime match at Wrestlemania 28 between Cena and The Rock as Black Adam.

Even in his recent step in Hollywood films, Cena nailed his small cameo in Trainwreck and he continues to do minor roles, which is great.
However, I don’t think the 16 time WWE champion has the acting chops to carry a tentpole film where he’s going to be THE lead headline star. He needs to be a lead of a few smaller films like this rumoured Knight Rider remake and have larger side roles similar to Daddy’s Home 2.
Additionally, I’m not only against Cena, I’m also against the other actor in the front running, British actor Joshua Sasse. The 29-year-old is best known for his TV work in the US including ABC’s Galavant and The CW’s No Tomorrow.

So who would you cast then Shaun? Well, there’s two. If they want a big name then the studio should try and convince Channing Tatum to leave this Gambit project at Fox and be the lead superhero in the DCEU.
On the other hand, I’ve always thought Alan Ritchson is the perfect choice as the Big, Red, Cheese.

He has big screen experience playing Raphael in the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies and he’s appeared as Aquaman in Smallville, but his role as Thad Castle in Blue Mountain State was the clinch for me.
Plus, 32-year-old Ritchson has the look, build and comedic chops to tackle this role.
I know DCEU casting and backlash come hand-in-hand at this point, so whoever they cast the internet will have its say, probably negatively. However, when it comes to 40-year-old’s possible casting I’m in the minority.
