The Meyerowitz Stories is the emotional and comic intergenerational tale of adult siblings (Sandler, Stiller, Marvel) contending with the long shadow their strong-willed father (Hoffman) has cast over their lives.

I really hope you're sitting down because I'm going to say something shocking and thought these words were ever possible to say, but Sandler and Stiller were fucking brilliant in The Meyerowitz Stories.

Up to this point, Sandler's Netflix films have been so utterly bollocks I won't even give him my time to waste. However, in The Meyerowitz Stories shows the 51 -year-old is capable of delivering a brilliant performance and hopefully be used to kick-start his career and take more roles like this.

The same goes Stiller after years for poor performances in shit films; he gives one of his best performances in years.

The whole cast performances were superb. Hoffman is great as the pain in the arse father, Marvel and Van Patten were very good and obviously, Emma Thompson was great because she's Emma Thompson.

Director Noah Baumbach does a brilliant if not only getting these performances from Sandler and co, but also in the way it’s directed and you could easily see this pick up by an A24 (distributor behind Moonlight).

However, I do think Baumbach did short change me with the ending.

Van Patten look so similar to Shailene Woodley it's odd she could be shortlisted for the Divergent TV movie, but let’s hope she can avoid that happening. However, if not now, differently in the coming months, don’t be surprised to see the 20-year-old in ‘2018 Next Big Stars to watch’ lists.

I'd strongly recommend people to watch The Meyerowitz Stories, it's a sweet, funny family drama.

Then I'd recommend Netflix made sure this film is awards-worthy (over Mudbound) because it could win Golden Globes for Best Actor in a comedy (Sandler), Supporting Actor (Hoffman) and Supporting Actress (Marvel) and maybe an acting Oscar nomination for Sandler and Hoffman.

Verdict

Sandler and Stiller are brilliant in this dramedy and could be Netflix first big success in award season.
