As people may know I’m a fan of romantic comedies with Love Actually, but ever since Richard Curtis’ final film About Time. There only been a few that could be classed as decent like Man Up and Sleeping With Other People, but nothing truly modern and brilliant until now with The Big Sick.

The Big Sick is based on the real-life courtship between acclaimed stand-up and comedy actor Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, Central Intelligence) and writing partner Emily V. Gordon. It tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his stand-up sets.

However, their one night stand turned into something real, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness with a mystery illness, Kuumail is forced to go through this medical crisis with Emily’s parents, Beth and Terry (Hunter and Romano) who he’s never met, while going through his own battle between his family and his heart.

This is the best rom-com/drama I’ve seen this About Time. Both Kumail and Emily have written a beautifully moving, funny, real story that shows the ups and downs of a modern relationship which can speak to everyone. Being semi-biographical helps with the grounding of this story.

The best parts of the film are the chemistry between Nanjiani and Kazan from meeting for the first time to their difficulties, which they don’t hide away from, with some moments being betrayal, especially in the hospital.

Nanjiani does a superb job of balancing different emotions with different characters handling himself whenever he’s with his family and meeting the next woman his mother trying to force him towards.

Meanwhile, Hunter and Romano do brilliantly injecting new life into the film and help Kumail carry it. This is the best I’ve ever seen Romano (Ray from Everybody loves Ray) act and does show he should be getting more dramatic roles and Hunter is on a roll the minute she’s on screen and it’s great to see both of these characters grow to love and care about Kumail.

As well as being dramatic, it does have some funny comedic moments and no one’s left out even Hunter delivers some funny lines.

Finally, this is the perfect date movie for Christmas and would make a decent present for that special someone and the bonus features are great to watch particularly the “Making Of” documentary.

Verdict

A superbly written, funny, emotional modern love story with equally brilliant performances from Nanjiani, Kazan and Hunter.
