Long live the king! As there’s a new ruler with a bright new future for the MCU and that man is Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther.

Following the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, T’Challa (Boseman) returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African Nation of Wakanda to become the new King. However, a powerful enemy reappears putting T’Challa’s mettle of King and Black Panther under threat and putting his homeland and world at risk.

If you’ve ever read my reviews you’ll know I’ve never been a major lover of the Marvel films with only three I’ve ever truly liked/loved. However, since Civil War (a film I believe is overrated and not even that good) Black Panther was the shining light and a film I’ve been looking forward. So I’m incredibly glad that this film was more wonderful then I could expect.

Ryan Coolger has directed a future classic and did something unlike many MCU, it had emotional depth and a believable villain who you could fully support and understandable point of view. As well as being stylish (it’s really shiny) and Wakanda is beautiful.

I’m glad it took within the opening 10 minutes the film to learn the history of the Black Panther, the backstory of the whole film and kick off from where we left T’Challa in Civil War.

The opening fight sequence reminds me a little bit like Batman Begins.

While I think Boseman did a great job as T’Challa giving him an understated performance, it is a little bit of an issue if your lead star isn’t in the top three performances of the film. The main standout is Jordan giving a powerful performance and making a man named Erik Killmonger as threating as he did, you understand and agree with his reasoning.

Letitia Wright nearly steals the whole film as Shuri using a great sense of humour and an awesome badass in her own right clearly smarter than either Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, she’s got a great future within the MCU. LET HER BECOME THE NEW IRON MAN!!

Meanwhile, Danai Gurira and her whole Diora Milaje give an air of strength and powerfulness and it’s great when we finally see them in action. Additionally, remember the name Winston Duke as we’ve got a star in the making and Daniel Kaluuya was also great.

As I said above Wakanda is beautiful and I love how they mixed future tech with modern metropolis’ and African heritage. The score was better than a hell of a lot of other Marvel scores and the music was used in the right place.

Verdict

The best origin story since Man of Steel with star performances from Wright and Duke. While Boseman and Black Panther are the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
