NXT TakeOver: Phoenix Preview & Predictions

IMAGE VIA WWE

The first NXT Takeover of 2019 happens this Saturday in Phoenix and all eyes will be on the brand to see if it continue its streak of beating the main brand during the big four PPV weekend.

This card looks no different and has the potential of having two or possibly three five-star, Match Of The Year matches.

The show will be airing on the WWE Network as part of the Royal Rumble and will be airing late in the UK meaning when I wake up Sunday morning it’ll be the first thing I’ll do.

Anyway, let’s have a look at the full match card and do some predictions.

NXT Tag Team Championship Match – Undisputed Era (c) vs War Raiders

This could be one of the MOTY potentials as UE’s Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong defend their titles against the challengers of Hanson and Rowe from War Raiders.

This would be a fun and exciting match to start of the show that already has a great story behind it and it’ll be great to see how these four competitors handle each other and there’s a lot that could go into this story.

There is an argument for War Raiders to leave with Phoenix with the titles, but I don’t see it happening for a number of reasons.

Undisputed Era has held the belt for a long time and they should keep them until Wrestlemania weekend before all four get called up to the main roster.

With Adam Cole and Bobby Fish not being used at all throughout Takeover, it gives them the freedom to ruin War Raiders chances and that’s how I think it’ll happen.

Plus if they do the screwy finish it means the loss doesn’t hurt Hanson and Rowe. Instead, giving them more reason to get their hands on them once again and give them a bigger pop at Wrestlemania when they do win it.

Prediction – Undisputed Era Retains The NXT Tag Team Championship

Matt Riddle vs Kassius Ohno

This will be a nice break before three massive title bouts, but it is a head-scratcher as to why we’re seeing these two fight again after Riddle defeated Ohno in seconds at War Games.

However, this match does make sense as if they have longer time they can build a story and hopefully show why Riddle is the future of NXT, but the King of Bros should win this easily.

Prediction – Matt Riddle wins

NXT Women’s Championship Match – Shayna Baszler (c) vs Bianca Belair

While I love Belair and truly believe she’s the future of WWE’s women’s division and she has been undefeated in NXT up until now as she will pick up her first defeat tomorrow.

The main reason is that Baszler is such a great heel and has just regained the title and deserves to hold it going into Wrestlemania weekend before moving up to the main roster.

What I expect is a damn fine match in which we see Belair become an even bigger star, but will get pinned.

Prediction – Shayna Baszler Retains The NXT Women’s Championship

NXT North American Championship Match – Ricochet (c) vs Johnny Gargano

This could easily be the match of the night as well as being the first five-star match because Gargano is on a five-star match streak right now and it defiantly won’t stop on Saturday night.

This match is important as the North American title has lost some steam and this bout could really lit a fire under it. Additionally, it can show how far Gargano as gone as a heel and believe having the belt around his waist could do wonders for Johnny Takeover similar to his former DIY partner Tommaso Ciampa with the NXT title.

Furthermore, the lost wouldn’t hurt Ricochet, in fact, it would free him up to be involved in the NXT title picture.

Prediction – Johnny Gargano Becomes The New NXT North American Champion

NXT Championship Match – Tommaso Ciampa (c) vs Aleister Black

IMAGE VIA WWE

This could be another five-star MOTY contender and I really enjoy both performers as Ciampa has become the best heel in the whole of WWE and Black is the most impressive star, but it’ll be the last time these two will ever fight on NXT.

Honestly, Black didn’t have the best of championship runs and Ciampa has been nothing but stellar and for that reason, I believe blackheart will keep goldie going into Wrestlemania.

As for Black, he should be involved in the Royal Rumble match and stay on the main roster.

I’m sure plenty of fans will be wanting Ciampa vs Velveteen Dream II and I’d jump on that ship right away, but I also love multi-person title matches and the last time that happened for the NXT title was a Takeover in 2015 which was a triple threat and 2014 since a fatal four way.

So the idea of a Ciampa vs Dream vs Ricochet triple threat at Wrestlemania weekend could be incredible.

Prediction – Tommaso Ciampa Retains The NXT Championship
