Phil Lord and Chris Miller are a gift to animation from the underrated Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs to the soon to be Oscar winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Obviously, The LEGO Movie helped give life to these iconic blocks and started a new franchise and now they’re back and funnier as ever.

When I spoke to LEGO Batman director and LEGO Movie 2 executive producer Chris McKay two years ago he said this sequel will focus on a big brother and little sister relationship and sibling rivalries.

He wasn’t wrong as the film is set five years after the events of the first film, Emmet (Pratt) must go to an unexplored, strange galaxy to save his friends, Lucy (Banks), Batman (Arnett), Unikitty (Brie), Benny (Day) and Metal Beard (Offerman) and restore harmony to the LEGO Universe.

I loved this film from the beginning, in some cases, it’s funnier than the original film with no stop jokes and probably subtle jokes I missed especially from the likes of Emmet’s innocents to Batman’s cockiness. There are so many easter eggs for fans to enjoy.

Meanwhile, the new characters add a lot Haddish as Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi is basically an innocent version of Haddish, which is just a delight and is differently a character that could easily get its own TV series, similar to Unikitty.

Meanwhile, Beatriz is such a great actress it’s mental she doesn’t get more roles, but it’s actually Pratt who steals the film with his new voice character Rex Dangervest, which is every role Pratt has played since becoming one of the most sort after actors in Hollywood and it works wonderfully.

Also, Noel Fielding is in the film in the most perfect role and you’ll go “of course he’s…”.

Away from the comedy the film does have plenty of heart and has McKay pointed towards is about sibling relationships both in the real world and in the LEGO Universe.

This is all down to the fantastic writing from Lord and Miller and Mike Mitchell’s directing and because of these films I hope they continue to make more LEGO spin-offs like Superman, Justice League and there’s enough for a Wyldstyle/Lucy solo adventure.

Music is also an important part with a great score from Mark Mothersbaugh and they’ll be two songs that will make you smile and no doubt be on repeat (I’ve been doing it since seeing it) is Catchy Song and the Lonely Island are back with Beck and Robyn for the brilliant and funny Super Cool because the end credits are the best part.

Gotham City Guys is a great song.

Verdict

Everything Is Awesome Here Right Now! The LEGO Movie 2 is just a delight with endless laughter and brilliant music and songs.
