We know that Star Wars Episode VIII director Rian Johnson knows the title of his Star Wars saga film, but he also went on to talk about what we can expect and we’ll be picking up right where Star Wars: The Force Awakens ended.

You know when Rey (Daisy Ridley) walks up a mountain and meets Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) on the hidden planet of Ahch-To, where Skywalker has been in hiding for a while, and Rey hands Luke his old lightsaber.

Talking to USA Today, writer and director Johnson said “I don’t want to skip ahead two years. I want to see the very next moment of what happens.

“Part of what [Rey’s] dealing with is the realisation that she has this power and this gift. She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”

Johnson also added “a large part” of Episode 8’s story will delve into Luke’s time on Ahch-To.

Johnson revealed to USA Today, the film will be showing Rey developing the strong connection towards Luke and connecting it to growing up.

“Both not knowing what’s going to happen and also having a lot of expectations in her head about how this is going to go,” says Johnson. “It very much feels like what we all go through in adolescence, the dawning of this new chapter of our lives.”

Johnson is a lifetime fan of Mark Hamill’s enigmatic Jedi, Johnson reveals Luke Skywalker will be our “emotional entry point” in Episode VIII. “What’s going on with Luke Skywalker?” was an interesting and essential question at the heart of the film.

“I’m approaching it with a take that I hope feels honest and real and is going to be interesting to folks and make sense.”

I like the idea of starting where The Force Awakens ended and the idea of exploring Rey and Luke's relationship is a smart thing and was a given. I don't believe they're related in any way, but I like the idea of Luke being the mentor figure Rey's been wanting her whole life.

Finally, I think we're going to see Luke at his darkest (and being a badass Jedi) and Rey will bring him to the light again.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will be released on December 15.
