WHAT A DAY! WHAT A LOVELY DAY!! As this year’s Oscar nominations have been announced with The Revenant leading the way with 12 Academy Award nominations with Mad Max: Fury Road just behind getting 10.

Both films have been nominated for Best Picture alongside The Big Short, Brooklyn, Bridge of Spies, The Martian, Room and Spotlight.

There’s nothing to complain about in this list, it would have been great to see Inside Out get nominated, I’m glad to see Mad Max, Brooklyn and Room in the mix and I honestly think Mad Max could win this with the right push.

Standing in the way of Leonardo DiCaprio winning his first best actor award is Eddie Redmayne, who’s hoping to repeat his 2015 success, for The Danish Girl and Michael Fassbender for biopic Steve Jobs.

Joining them in the best actor category is Matt Damon, who starred in the space saga The Martian and Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, where he portrays real – life Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.

Again, you can’t complain about this group they’ve all done a fantastic job and even though Fassbender is seen as the likely winner. I believe it’s finally going to be DiCaprio’s year.

Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Carol’s Cate Blanchett continue their dominance in award season with all three nominated for best actress and they’re joined by previous Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence for Joy and veteran British actress Charlotte Rampling, who receives a nomination for 45 Years.

It’s great seeing Rampling nominated, but I think it’s a two horse race between Larson and Ronan.

Then in the best director nominees include Adam McKay for The Big Short, Mad Max: Fury Road’s George Miller, Alejandro G. Inarritu for The Revenant, Lenny Abrahamson for Room and finally Spotlight’s Tom McCarthy.

The favourite is Inarritu, but the film fan in me will be rooting for George Miller and what he did with Mad Max: Fury Road is phenomenal and if you haven’t watched it do you’re a favour and watch it you’ll love it.

I’m surprised and a little disappointed Room’s Jacob Tremblay wasn’t nominated for best supporting actor, but he’s a young kid with a massive future ahead of him so I think he’ll be fine.
