Recap of Superbowl Movie Spots

The Superbowl is an odd sporting event, years ago, it was about American Football teams competing throughout for the whole season until we got to the final two and they played four 15 minute quarters and the team with the most points won and were crowned the best team of that season.

However, fast forward to Superbowl 50 and even though those values are still there, it has become the go to place for advertisement with 100s of millions of people watching both sporting and non sporting fans alike. The adverts have become as famous as the game itself with companies spending $5 million (nearly £3.5 million) on a 30 second spot.

This year, it’s become about what film trailers we will see and now let’s look at the brand new trailers released last night.

Pre – Show: Turkish Airlines
Before the game had even started, Turkish Airlines treated us to two brand new flying destinations: Gotham City and Metropolis. It included Gotham’s very own Bruce Wayne promoting his hometown, while Lex Luthor championed his rebuilt city.

This is an incredibly clever advert from Turkish Airlines and Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder to make these two cities feel real and I actually want to go to these places that how well done these ads were. They also included hashtags #FlyToGotham and #FlyToMetroplis.

We also got to meet Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor better and I can already tell Ben Affleck has got both the personalities of Wayne and Batman fully secured, while Jesse Eisenberg gives a little bit more of Luthor's public persona.

The Jungle Book
The biggest and longest trailer of the Superbowl was in Rudyard Kipling’s classic children's story.

The only thing I can say is WOW, I loved this trailer and hearing these realistic animals talk was just incredible. I felt like a kid again and just hear Sir Ben Kingsley as Bagheera (the black panther), Bill Murray as Baloo (the bear), Idris Elba’s Shere Khan (the tiger) is spot on and then you have Christopher Walken as King Louise (the orangutan).

There’s nothing bad I can say about this film, just childish giddiness.

Captain America: Civil War
This was the most anticipated Superbowl film spot of the night and if you’re a Marvel fan or just a comicbook fan you weren’t disappointed.

For me, however I’m not a fan of the Marvel films and was less of a fan of the first trailer back in November, yet this 30 second spot gave me more what I wanted i.e. the actual conflict between Iron Man and Captain America and the two sides staying face to face ready to fight for what they believe in.

Team Iron Man – Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr); War Machine (Don Cheadle); Vision (Paul Bettany); Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman).

Team Captain America – Captain America (Chris Evans); Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan); Ant Man (Paul Rudd); Hawkeye (Jeremy Rinner); Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)

Jason Bourne
I have to admit I have never seen a Bourne film, I’ve always meant to but so far never gotten round to watching them, but I do have a basic idea of the previous Bourne films were about.

Matt Damon looks in amazing shape and beefier than I’ve ever seen him and the little details of the plot we got have made me really interested in this film and I’ll go back to catch up.

If it wasn’t for The Jungle Book, this would have been my favourite trailer of the Superbowl.

Eddie the Eagle
The smallest film that got a Superbowl spot, but easily the film with the biggest heart.

It’s amazing to think our very own Eddie the Eagle has got a film about this historical showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and starring in this feel – good sports comedy is Huge Jackman and Taron Egerton of Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Like the film, this 30 second spot took at heartfelt approach featuring former Superbowl winners Kurt Warner, Russell Wilson and Drew Brees, all names you’ve never heard of but trust me they’re massive in America and will get audiences wanting to see this little, underdog film.

Notable Mentions:

Deadpool
Nothing left for me to say, the film is out this Wednesday.

10 Cloverfield Lane
Sort of sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield. Have no idea what the film is about, but it’s really interested me and stars the brilliant John Goodman and Elizabeth Winstead.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows
Sequel to the 2014 film, which was padded by critics, but still done solid business. Its CGI fun for the kids and something for dads as Megan Fox is dressed as a schoolgirl showing off her midriff.

Independence Day: Resurgence
It took nearly 20 years to get this sequel so why the hell should we care about aliens invading America again just with bigger spaceships.

Alice Through the Looking Glass
Yet another sequel. It’s just a lot of sounds and Johnny Deep hamming it up as the Mad Hatter.

The Secret Life of Pets
To get a sense of the plot watch the earlier trailer released last week, but this spot was just a bit of fun for the children.

X-Men: Apocalypse
Shows us more of the titled villain and a pretty bad ass action shot of Oliva Munn’s Psylocke, Apocalypse’s right – hand woman.
