Director John Hillcoat has put together an incredibly strong in-depth cast, which includes Kate Winslet, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck and Chiwetel Ejiofor who have all been previous Oscar winners and nominees. As well as future award winners like Anthony Mackie and Aaron Paul.
Triple Nine was one of my ‘Films To See In 2016’ and I’m glad I chose it.

Hillcoat and writer Mark Cook have come up with an incredibly interesting and gripping story that will glue you to the edge of your seat while being so relentless in tension you’ll be edging closer to the screen. As you see and feel the dirt of Atalanta’s underbelly in this crime thriller and it’ll keep you guessing all the way to the end.
It shows from the beginning with a terrific bank heist and opening sequence which follows it, the red flare going off inside the getaway car was a highlight.

It’s the performance’s of Harrelson and Winslet that really steal the show as both are similar and different at the same time. Harrelson really showcases the dirt of Atlanta but is also strong and passionate when it comes to his job and family. While Winslet is unrecognisable as the boss of the Russian mob and shows off the other side of a powerful woman as she’s completely heartless when it comes to her work whilst looking composed and sexy.

It’s shame the other women in the film, Gal Gadot as Ejiofor’s ex and Teresa Palmer as Affleck’s wife, weren’t as developed and it felt like they were just an afterthought. While the other men of the film, Affleck, Mackie, Paul and Ejiofor had a lot to work with and did a brilliant job.

Verdict
An incredible ensemble cast led by a Harrelson and Winslet, brilliantly directed by Hillcoat, who delivers a dirty, relentless and gripping crime drama/thriller.
