Mad Max Leads The Way At The 2016 Empire Awards Picking Up 10 Nominations

IMAGE VIA EMPIRE MAGAZINE

Following the BAFTAs and Oscars, there’s only one award ceremony left to care about and that’s the 21st annual Jameson Empire awards, a British middle finger to the mainstream film awards, are coming and what makes these awards special is the nominations were all voted by the readers.

Mad Max: Fury Road is leading the way with 10 nominations including Best Film, Best Director for George Miller, and Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron received acting noms. Not (in a galaxy far) far behind was Star Wars: The Force Awakens with nine nominations including Best Newcomer nods to two of the film’s breakout stars, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley.

What makes the Empire awards so special is that they recognise the great films and actors overlooked in the mainstream awards ceremonies. They include Creed’s Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler, who were both snubbed by the Oscars, are nominated for Best Actor and Best Director, while Room’s incredible, and possibly one of the greatest performances by child ever, Jacob Tremblay picks up a Best Newcomer nom.

The Best Newcomer awards could be close and hotly contested with Bel Powley, who missed out on the BAFTA Rising Star award, is nominated for The Diary Of A Teenage Girl as are Beasts Of No Nation’s Abraham Attah and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’s Rebecca Ferguson.

These awards also recegnise genres ignored by others with the likes of It Follows and The Hallow involved in Best Horror and Me, Earl and the Dying Girl, Inside Out and Spy all up for Best Comedy.

Empire have also add new categories including Best TV Series (Marvel’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones got nominated as well as Game of Thrones, but no Flash? Come on, it’s a brilliant show!) and Best Game (Batman: Arkham Knight and Fallout 4).

The 21st Jameson Empire Awards take place on March 20th, with David Walliams as master of ceremonies.
