Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road were the big winners at last night Empire Awards. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega picked up both Best Female and Male Newcomer awards respectively.

The Force Awakens was also named Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy film and the man who brought the saga back to life J.J. Abrams won Best Director. It was the night’s biggest winner taking home five awards, followed by Mad Max with four, and once again dominating the technical categories, James Bond’s latest adventure Spectre won two (Best British Film and Best Thriller).

What makes the Empire Award special is all of the winners were selected by the magazine readers, who went against the likes of the Oscars and BAFTAs. So instead of Leonardo DiCaprio winning Best Actor, it was Matt Damon who won for his performance in Ridley Scott’s The Martian. The same goes for Alicia Vikander who can cap off a fantastic 12 months by beating out Brie Larson for Best Actress.

The evening was also spent celebrating some Empire Magazine’s favourite people, but have never really been recognised for their stellar careers and talent. Paddy Considine was presented with the Empire Inspiration award; Stanley ‘The Tucc’ Tucci received the Empire Hero and Empire’s editor Terri White lead an emotional tribute to Empire Legend Alan Rickman.
