As Disney continue to step up adapting their fairy tale classics to live action following the global success of The Jungle Book, the next film set to get the big-screen treatment is The Little Mermaid.
Deadline reports the Mouse house is bringing back original Oscar-winning Mermaid songwriter Alan Menken and will be teaming up with the musical genius behind Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The project is still in the early stages, but Miranda has become incredibly busy since winning 11 Tony awards, starring in Mary Poppins Returns opposite Emily Blunt and helped with the music for Disney’s upcoming Moana, now he’ll be supervising the story along with Menken also craft new songs to sit alongside the classics.
No director has been attached yet and Disney’s production president Sean Bailey is in the process of finding a writer to flesh out a new pitch for the story.
Miranda has a soft spot for The Little Mermaid even naming his newborn son Sebastian after the chatty crab.
The more I hear about Miranda, and seeing this Instagram videos with The Rock, the more I like him and even though I don’t like the idea of a Mary Poppins sequel, I’m sure he’s going to do an excellent job trying to respect those who adore the original, similar to The Little Mermaid situation.
If the project becomes into fruition, this Disney version of Mermaid will have to compete with Universal’s take on Hans Christian Andersen tale as its public domain. This one is further down the line with Chloe Grace Moretz in the lead and a screenplay by Richard Curtis.
