When Sing Street first came out in May it became my favourite film of the year and now three months later, it’s my favourite Blu-ray for the year.

This small independent Irish film won the hearts of everyone who saw it (turns out not enough), even the evil critics loved this movie to the point it got a 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now it’s you can enjoy and fall in love with this film as it’s out on DVD and Blu-ray now!

Sing Street takes us back to 1980s Dublin, where we meet Conor (Walsh-Peelo) who wants to form a band to win the heart of uber-cool, aspiring model Raphina (Boynton).

At the heart of it, Carney has made a teenage cliché love story, but for some magical, brilliant reason it doesn’t feel cliché. The big reason is Carney’s witty, smart, heartfelt script and it was also beautifully directed.

If you want to find out what Spider-Man: Homecoming should be aiming for it’s this film because Sing Street reminds me of a John Hughes film.

Carney also delivers on something that’s incredibly important to the film and it’s seeing the band work on music. Starting from scratch writing lyrics to songs and them figuring out what the beat should be.

The whole cast were superb, but it’s the performances of Walsh-Peelo and Reynor that are the standouts as they had fantastic chemistry whenever they were on screen together and it’s Reynor who nails the most heartfelt scene of the entire film. I also sort of fell in love with Boynton as she was able to bring this charm to the film.

Obviously 80s music plays a huge part in the film, it’s sort of its own character, and it makes the soundtrack incredible with music from Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and even the band themselves. I guarantee you’ll have ‘Drive It Like You Stole It’ stuck in your head.

Verdict

You’ll laugh, cry, sing along and just have a great time watching this film. Carney has delivered an incredible story, performances and soundtrack. So what are you waiting for? Buy it!
