Before you carry on reading, this story has a MAJOR SPOILER about details on Zendaya’s character in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Wrap’s super scooper Umberto Gonzalez has found out Zendaya will be playing Peter Parker’s most famous love interest Mary Jane Watson in next summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

When 19-year-old was first cast many diehard Spidey fans speculated who the Disney darling could play after given the character name of Michelle. Then during Comic-con three weeks ago, Entertainment Weekly talked to the cast and director Jon Watts where he confirmed the identities of his cast including Zendaya.

It was strongly suggested she’d be playing Michelle Gonzales, but The Wrap is saying in at least one recent draft it includes several clue hinting towards Mary Jane, one of (or if not the) most familiar love interest in Marvel and comic book history, the character was last played on the big screen by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s 2002 – 07 Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinger.

However, even though the “K.C. Undercover” and “Shake It Up!” star is said to be in a “key role” it’s still not certain she’ll be the main love interest in the film as Laura Harrier’s Liz Allan is said to be the one Parker is pining over.

When the story broke, website Vulture got ahold of their sources and said: “Michelle’s real identity was a twist meant to be confirmed near the end of the film when she would finally invite Peter to call her ‘M.J’.”

It’s a shame if it turns out to be true did happen like this because it would have been a nice surprise for the audience, but it was always going to be hard to keep a character reveal like this secret.

Tom Holland returns for his first solo outing as the friendly neighbourhood superhero after impressing fans and audiences in Captain America: Civil War.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to swing into cinemas on July 7, 2017.

Fun fact: Shailene Woodly was cast as Mary Jane Watson in Amazing Spider-Man 2 and filmed scenes, but the character was cut out of the film completely and we were going to meet her in Amazing Spider-Man 3.
