Depending on where you live, different awards will mean different things, but for me, I’ve always seen the BAFTA’s as the second most important film awards after the Oscars.
Today (5th January) BAFTA have announced their nominees for the 2017 EE Rising Star Award. It’s great to see this award getting a nice mix of the most talented up-and-coming actors and actresses from around the world.
So will be following in the footsteps of last year’s deserved winner John Boyega?
Laia Costa

Laia Costa is a Spanish actress who starred in Victoria, a German crime thriller. It was shot all in one take in real time about a young woman getting caught up in a heist after a chance encounter – impressively she appears in every scene.
Honestly, I’ve never heard of this actress or the film, but this sounds awesome and looking on Rotten Tomatoes it received a lot of praise from critics. So I’m hoping it appears on a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon soon.
Tom Holland

The most well know and probably the overwhelming favourite to win this award.
Holland broke out in The Impossible in 2012, but it was his appearance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War that has made him a household name and his upcoming standalone Spider-Man: Homecoming (coming out July 7) will make him an international star.
Lucas Hedges
Lucas Hedges has had an impressive career up to this moment. The 20-year-old has worked with Wes Anderson on Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel, Terry Gilliam’s Zero Theorem and Jason Reitman on Labor Day.

However, it’s his performance in this year’s Oscar hopeful (it’ll be a contender) Manchester By The Sea as a young man forced to live with his troubled uncle (Casey Affleck) after his father dies.
Anya Taylor-Joy
2016 has been an incredible year for Anya Taylor-Joy. She won rave reviews for her performance in the horror flick The Witch since then she has been landing several leading roles.

She also impressed as Morgan in the self-titled film, as Barack Obama’s girlfriend in Netflix’s Barry and starring opposite James McAvoy (previous winner of this award) and his 23 personalities in M Night Shyamalan’s Split.
I see the 20-year-old, along with the final nominee, as a wildcard for this award.
Ruth Negga
You may recognise this actress in the TV series Preacher, but it’s her breakout performance in Jeff Nichol’s Loving which is getting the Irish actress all the plaudit. This includes a Golden Globe nomination and she’s tipped for Oscar glory too.
The honour celebrates the brightest actors and actresses and captured “the imagination of the British public” and it will be the public will be able to vote for the winner.
This year’s winner will receive the accolade from last year’s victor Boyega at the 70th British Academy Film Awards.
