The Raid Remake Is On The Way

The Raid US remake is still happening with director Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo now developing a “reimagining” of this superb foreign film.

They confirmed the news via teaser video posted on Twitter with Carnahan and Grillo watching The Raid and setting out their plan a potential adaptation. Both noted it’ll have to be its own thing and not a shot for shot remake.

An American remake has been always on the cards since Gareth Evans’ original incredible Indonesian martial arts/actioner glued audiences around the world, especially finding a cult following on DVD and streaming. The film was a massive hit with some of the best action and best fight scenes seen in recent times.

It was such a worldwide success it spawned a sequel and The Raid 2 was released in 2014. However, like a lot of fantastic foreign films, Hollywood saw the opportunity to make money and an American remake was in development.

The rights were original bought by the company called Screen Gems in 2011 and named Phil Hughes, who directed Expendables 3, as the man who’ll direct the remake. So already this pointless remake was in a bad way.

Captain America and The Purge star Grillo was the first actor attached, but since then the studio and Hughes had issues filling out assembling a cast. Finally, in 2015, the project was dead in the water after Screen Gems, Hughes and potential star Taylor Kitsch all dropped out.

Now, The Raid remake is back with an impressive creative team behind it. By the looks of thing XYZ Films will be developing the project with The Grey and Smokin’ Aces director Carnahan writing and directing the film with Grillo still attached to star.

After the video lit up Twitter, Carnahan took the time to calm fans down and we’ll learn more when he and Grillo sit down and chat to Collider’s Steve Weintraub about The Raid.

Honestly, I don’t think there was no need for a remake or “reimagining” the original films are fucking fantastic and people shouldn’t be scared or lazy of subtitles and the only reason this is happening is because of the money it could make.

However, I think with someone as talented as Carnahan helming the project, who’s attached to co-write and direct Bad Boys for Life, and his acknowledgement of the original film plus the blessing of Evans (who’ll be producing) means we will get something different and I think it has potential. I just need to learn a little more from his interview with Collider to be 100%.

Finally, it looks like actors are already lining up as DCTV's and Legend of Tomorrow star Caity Lotz throwing her hat into the ring.
