Disney Finds Director For Live Action Mulan

Disney is going full throttle adapting their superb animated films to live action with a crap tonne in development including Aladdin, Dumbo, The Lion King and plenty more.

One of these films is Mulan and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Whale Rider’s Niki Caro will be directing the live-action adaptation.

THR also reports Caro will be joined by Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon producer Bill Kong who has been attached as an executive producer.

It’s okay if you’ve never heard of Caro, to be honest, I had to check out her IMDB, but she previously helmed 2002’s Whale Rider, 2015 Disney film McFarland, USA and she has a film coming out this year called The Zookeeper’s Wife, starring Jessica Chastain.

The remake of the 1998 animated classic is being written by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, with Chris Bender and JC Spink producing.

Insides have told Vanity Fair, “The spec script was a jumping-off point for a new take on the story that draws from both the literary ballad of Mulan and Disney’s 1998 animated film.

“Mulan is and will always be the lead character in the story, and all primary roles, including the love interest, are Chinese.”

What’s so fantastic about this news is Caro becomes the second woman at the studio to direct a movie with a budget over $100 million (the first being Ava DuVerney with A Wrinkle In Time).

Disney also considered Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead) before going with Caro. This will mean Caro will no longer be in the running to helm Captain Marvel.

Disney’s live-action Mulan is scheduled to be released in 2018.
