It’s been plenty of ups and downs for the DCU with mostly downs recently especially regarding Ben Affleck and The Batman.
To make sure you’re up to date – Ben Affleck looked to be set to direct and star in The Batman even going on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to confirm he was still going to star and direct the film.
A few weeks later after that interview on Kimmel, Warner Bros and Affleck released a statement confirming he will be stepping down as director and will be looking for someone else to helm the project and work with Affleck, who will still star.
We then learnt Oscar-winning screenwriter Chris Terrio did rewrites on the script previously written be Affleck and DC co-chief Geoff Johns.
Finally, this week Forbes’ Mark Hughes wrote a brilliant article saying his sources told him things aren’t all rosy (as we could guess) and they’re having issues with the script saying “the project will undergo substantial changes and possible/probably another full rewrite.”
Adding once they find a new director “the project will essentially get a fresh start once a new creative time has been put together.”
Last night (9th February) Batman-News tweeted Variety’s film reporter Justin Kroll who replied with this:
@BatmanNewsCom No, several sources already saying new script came in this month and everyone including Emmerich and Ben very happy with it— Justin Kroll (@krolljvar) 9 February 2017
Is it good news that a new script (likely with Terrio’s rewrites) was handed in? Yes, of course, and it’s good to hear Kroll’s saying his sources are telling him people are very happy with the script especially Affleck and new Warner Bros President and Chief Content Officer Toby Emmerich.
However, this news was just a tweet and until Kroll pens a report and we get news of a new director attached than (while we should be happy some good news have come out) ultimately we should still be pessimistic and expect rewrites to happen.
Look at it this way, Emmerich and Affleck are happy with the work Terrio has done during the rewrites of the script, but expect more news on the script once Matt Reeves or whoever comes on board to direct because they’ll want to put their stamp on it too and work alongside Affleck and Terrio.
