Live Action Aladdin Producer Promising No Whitewashing For Upcoming Film

If you had any worries Guy Ritchie’s live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin was going to have whitewashing. You can put those fears to bed, as the producer of the live action film wants “to make a diverse version of the movie.”

While talking to Collider to promote The LEGO Batman Movie, Dan Lin (producer of the upcoming Aladdin) spoke about diversity saying it won’t be another Prince of Persia.

“Look at me. I mean, I’m not a typical guy,” admitted the Taiwanese – born producer, who’s also on the board of the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE).

“Listen, I’m very fortunate working in Hollywood; I am diverse. So when I came in to make the movie, I wanted to make a diverse version of the movie.

“Luckily for me Guy Ritchie has the same vision and Disney has the same vision, so we’re not here to Prince of Persia. We want to make a movie that’s authentic to that world.”

OH BURN!

In case you haven’t seen the video game adaptation of Prince of Persia (you don’t need to, it’s not very good) it starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton and Toby Kebbell (none of them, funnily enough, are Persian).

Lin added he wants to find newcomers who can sing for the upcoming Aladdin film.

“We’re gonna be discovering new people because it’s a real challenge – because not only does an actor have to act, but really have to have singing chops,” he said.

Aladdin isn’t the only popular Disney animation getting the live action treatment as they’re also Dumbo, Mulan, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King in development.
