Last night (21st February) some huge X-Men dropped and it looks like a new film is in the works and Fox have found their director.
News of a brand new X-Men film came out of the blue when Sophie Turner (who played Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse) mentioned she will be starting filming soon whilst on the red carpet of the BAFTA’s. This was followed up by an Instagram post from James McAvoy saying “I can’t wait for the summer.”
Now, Collider has learnt from their sources that Simon Kinberg is in talks to direct after handing in a screenplay. It’s also rumoured the film (tentatively called X-Men: Supernova) will focus on the Dark Phoenix saga and this film will be in addition to previously announced films – Deadpool 2 and New Mutants – which are also rumoured to be starting filming sometime in 2017.
The 43-year-old has been a producer on all of the X-Men film and TV series since writing X-Men: The Last Stand to Deadpool and now the upcoming Logan and FX’s Legion. He’s also a producer on Star Wars Rebels on Disney XD and he penned the screenplay for X-Men: Apocalypse.
At the speed 20th Century Fox are going at this looks like it’ll be nailed on, if so then this will be Kinberg’s first ever directorial project and it looks like McAvoy will sign a new contact and will feature in both X-Men: Supernova and New Mutants.
Alongside McAvoy, expect all of the new X-Men we met in Apocalypse to return and maybe Michael Fassbender (Magneto) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast), but don’t be surprised if Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t reprise her role of Mystique.
