Venom Movie Could Be An R-Rated Horror

Recently out-of-the-blue Sony Pictures placed a release date for Spider-Man spin-off Venom and then it was followed up with Sony putting a Silver Sable/Black Cat movie into development.

Now, we have a little bit more info after Collider revealed that not only are Sony developing their own Venom movie but also kick-starting their own Marvel Universe with their minds set on making this spin-off R-rated.

Collider also stresses plans can change from now to the film's 5th October 2018 release, but state this movie will launch a Sony Marvel Universe and the reason to making it R-rated is expected to keep a low/reasonable budget.

The fact Fox’s Deadpool and Logan have been successes must’ve played a part too.

However, a lot of info is still unknown, but it was confirmed by Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts the film WON’T be a part of the MCU and Venom will begin production in Autumn/Fall 2017 (a year before the film’s release).

It was also revealed recently the film will be an Action/Horror/Sci-Fi, which sounds about right.

Venom is defiantly the character to benefit from an R-rating especially if it’s having elements of horror and sci-fi and this is something Marvel Studios/Disney would never do with the character if they ever got round to him.

Personally, I think it’s a great idea. I know Sony haven’t done the best job with Venom, but they have new people in charge and having more, different superhero films will benefit the genre just look at what Fox is doing with X-Men and obviously you have Warner Bros and the DCU.

As for a director, look at getting someone with a horror background would be ideal. The only downside is most of the top ones have already got major properties in development – James Wan/Aquaman, Lights Out’s David F. Sandberg/Shazam (rumoured), Don’t Breathe’s Fede Alvarez/ Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

This leaves one director in my mind and he’s made one of the most financially successful critically praised films of 2017 and that’s Get Out director Jordan Peele.
