Hellboy 3 IS Happening Without Guillermo del Toro

It seems Hellboy IS coming back to the big screen after last hearing Guillermo del Toro had a failed meeting and was “100% dead.”

Now the franchise is getting an R-rated rebooted with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola confirming the news on this Facebook, but del Toro won’t be returning alongside Ron Perlman, who isn’t coming back as the cigar-favouring demon.

It’s really odd this news is broke because the last we heard was back in early 2017 when del Toro told his followers on Twitter, “Hellboy 3 Sorry to report: Spoke w all parties. Must report that 100% the sequel will not happen. And that is to be the final thing about it.”

Now, move forward three months to last night (8th May 2017), “There IS going to be another HELLBOY MOVIE. It’s going to be an R-rated reboot directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) and starring David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy,” wrote Mignola on Facebook.

The Hollywood Reporter added the film even has a working title of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and Millennium is in talks with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin about relaunching the property with a new instalment.

If the deal is made (and judging by Mignola’s FB, it’s happening) Millennium would be the third company to make the Hellboy films. The first film was made by Revolution Studios and released by Sony in 2004, meanwhile, the sequel was made by Universal back four years later.

THR also revealed as well as directing, Marshall is working on the new script with Aron Coleite.

It’s just very odd this film is happening at all, considering del Toro and Perlman were pushing so hard to get this film happening after the massive support from fans.

I haven’t seen Stranger Things so I don’t know if Harbour will be good in the role especially a character like Hellboy with the well-knowingness of Perlman. While I’m all for an R-rated reboot with a horror director, del Toro should be making this film.

On the other hand, I fully understand the business side of things as the popular director makes expressive (though brilliant Pacific Rim anyone?) and studios get little profit in return. So I can see Hellboy 3 costing under $100 million to make just so companies like Universal, Sony, Lionsgate etc can make some money in return for distributing.
