Beginning with The Cornetto Trilogy and then Scott Pilgrim vs The World, I’ve been a massive fan of Edgar Wright and I’m so happy to say his latest movie Baby Driver is so fucking brilliant; it’s rivalling La La Land as my favourite movie of 2017.
A talented, young getaway driver Baby (Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (James), Baby sees his best chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

I’m not being over the top by saying Wright has directed a modern cult classic. The way he edited music to the beat and rhythm – there’s a moment in the third act with bullets – is nothing but superb! Meanwhile, the way he directed from long tracking shots, dreamesque scenes and of the high paced action.
Staying with the music/soundtrack because it’s such an important element to the film it goes past being a gimmick, the film is named after a Simon and Garfunkel track! Furthermore, the music helps tell Baby’s story when words don’t need/have too.
Thanks to Baby Driver, Elgort as safely moved from tween heartthrob to Hollywood’s next big star and I can see him being Nightwing. You see Baby grow up in front of us from a naïve kid to a man taking control and you were routeing for him as a driver and person.

Meanwhile, the supporting cast were brilliant especially Spacey, Foxx and James and they all played a part in Baby’s character, but no one is has important as Joseph (CJ Jones) who brings the humanity to the film.
Elgort has fantastic chemistry with all four, but Spacey helps the young actor rise to his level and with James, you can’t but fall in love with her. She has this present and ora whenever she’s on screen that makes her likeable and loveable, I think it’s those brown eyes.
Plus, I won't be able to hear the word baby with think of James saying "B-A-B-Y, Baby?"

The other members of the supporting cast did a brilliant job – Hamm is decent as a villain and would love to see him more in those roles, Gonzalez is just a drop dead beautiful badass and could easily be the next big Hollywood actress.
One of my favourite scenes is near the end of the second act in a dinner between Foxx and Gonzalez and it has brilliant character moments especially from the 27-year-old actress.

The only nit-picky thing is I would love to have more Jon Bernthal.
Finally, Wright is known for his humour, but what’s great he never delivered gag after gag. When the jokes did come it felt natural.
Verdict
From acting, directing, editing and the soundtrack, Baby Driver is a FUCKING AWESOME FILM!! What more do you need?
