Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated World War 2 epic, Dunkirk has smashed both the UK and US box offices.

The new cinematic event went straight into number one both countries in its debut opening weekend scoring an impressive £9.5 million with £1,330,000 coming from IMAX venues.

These numbers have made Dunkirk, Warner Bros’ biggest opening weekend in the UK of 2017.

Meanwhile, in the States, the film has grossed $50.5 million dollars bringing its worldwide total from the opening weekend at $105.9 million dollars (via Box Office Mojo).

With a production budget of $150 million (plus marketing), then this film is well on track to make a profit for the studio.

Warner Bros UK President and Managing Director Josh Berger talked excitedly about the film’s success saying, “Christopher Nolan has created a film that brings this extraordinary event to the screen in a thrilling and uniquely real cinematic experience.

“Critics and audiences alike agree that Dunkirk must be seen on the biggest possible screen, and we anticipate that the incredible response among audiences across the UK will drive continued success well into the summer” he added.

I was glad to have seen it in my local independent cinema. Even though the tension gave me both jaw and arse ache, I plan to see it again and as Nolan intended it on 70MM IMAX.
