Brand new Power Rangers, same old cheesiness and this up-to-date reboot is a better movie than most critics give it for. Is it a great movie? No. However, it’s a good time and you’ll enjoy it a lot more than you think.

Power Rangers follow five ordinary teenagers from a small town of Angel Grove. Chosen by destiny, these teenagers must band together and overcome their real-life issues to save the planet before being obliterated by an alien threat.

As said above, Power Rangers is a better movie than it ever have should be. Yes, it’s a basic, up-to-date origin story but it also has the campy heart of the original 90s TV series I grew up on.

The movie, while being slightly over long, has fun and you can see director Israelite is a massive fan of the show and gets to play with the whole Breakfast Club with Chronicle feel. He also gets decent performances from this largely unknown cast.

Cyler and Scott are the two best performances and in the case of Cyler, it’s great to see his Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger) as a role model for kids on the atheist spectrum and with disabilities. He’s also the heart of the film, without his innocents and pure joy for being with these four other kids this film wouldn’t be what it is.

Meanwhile, Scott (Pink Ranger) just shows she’s a star of the future and with roles like Jasmine in the upcoming live-action Aladdin, you can see why Disney cast her. The British actress is also one of my choices to be Batgirl.

Elsewhere, Montgomery (Red Ranger) is perfectly fine and the same goes for Lin (Black Ranger), though he is a bit annoying at the beginning. Becky G’s Trini (Yellow Ranger) is another role model in the film for teenagers questioning their sexuality.

Cranston’s Zordan is a massive prick, Hader as Alpha 5 brings a lot of humour and fun to the film. As for Banks’ Rita Repula, you can see she’s having a great time in the role but she does go to OTT.

Furthermore, the score is actually surprisingly good.

Finally, Power Rangers has the best/ridiculously blatant product placement in film history.

It’s a shame it looks like we’re unlikely getting a sequel because with the cast and characters introduced, I’d like to have seen more.

Verdict

A fun, good film with decent performances from the whole cast, especially Cyler and Scott.
