The frontrunner director to helm Suicide Squad 2 has been confirmed as the man to direct Disney’s next big adventure film.
Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) looked to be lined up by Warner Bros to be leading Suicide Squad 2 despite nothing being officially confirmed, but the likelihood is highly possible.
However, if you have a meeting with Dwayne Johnson about being the first person to direct a possible next big budget franchise for Disney it’s hard to say no.
I'm a gut & instincts guy. 1st time I met Jaume, I was confident he was the one. Visionary/edgy filmmaker. Excited 4 the fans #JungleCruise https://t.co/ByFTGYJ2XM— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) 31 July 2017
According to Deadline, Collet-Serra will be taking on the Indiana Jones-style Jungle Cruise, starring The Rock as its lead. Again, hard to say no to that.
The thing that must be a kick in the teeth for WB is Collet-Serra is a homegrown director at the studio and Suicide Squad 2 would’ve been their sign to say “we have big things for you.”
On the other hand, in the Spaniard's defence to have the choice between a sequel to a hugely successful but devise comic book film or direct the first of many high, action family adventure film similar to Pirates with Johnson as your lead.
To be honest, I’d probably go with Jungle Cruise and be a part of his Seven Bunks Productions team too. Because he has the chance to direct Johnson again in a future film.
However, even though WB has a bad record with keeping directors for their DC projects. They also have a great record finding brilliant replacements – Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Matt Reeves (Batman) and Joss Wheldon (Justice League).
Nothing is own about the story, but the most recent draft was written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and expect Johnson to be on a ride full of danger and exotic creatures. Filming is set to begin early next year.
As for Collet-Serra, his next film The Commuter, starring Liam Neeson is due out January 19.
