Justice League Reshoots To Help With Cyborg's Character

Depending what you read, reshoots for the upcoming Justice League are either major pieces or minor character work. For what it’s worth, I think it’s probably more character stuff as that’s a major strength of Joss Whedon.

Anyway, IGN’s Jim Vejvoda caught up with Joe Morton, who plays Cyborg’s S.T.A.R Labs dad Dr Silas Stone, who talked about the Whedon –directed reshoots and revealed some of them was to help bring a lighter tone to Cyborg’s character.

When asked about the differences about the additional shooting, Morton explained.

“Well, the stuff that I had to do were just really small little bits and pieces, nothing necessarily having to do with tone. I know that with Ray [Fisher], the young man who plays Victor, there were some adjustments that they made in terms of the tone of the character.

“I think what I heard was that there was a need from the studio to lighten up the film in a way, that the film felt too dark. I don’t know what that meant in terms of how it actually got translated in terms of reshoots but that’s what I heard. That’s what I thought some of the reshoots were about.”

Much like with character, bringing Whedon on board will mean you’ll get more banter between the characters and as a person, Ray Fisher is a fun, excited young actor. So why not bring his personalities to Cyborg, who (despite his obvious dark origins) has also had some light in him. His catchphrase is Booyah!

Elsewhere, Morton talks about the similarities between Dr Stone and Dr Miles Dyson in Terminator 2 and the social commentary when it comes to Cyborg.

“I think you’re correct. It is unintended consequences and then at first it’s not looked upon by Victor as something that’s correct. Unlike the other members of the Justice League, Victor has no alias, he has no way of hiding behind another personality or some sort of mask in order to protect themselves.

“He’s very much like Frankenstein [Frankenstein’s Creature] again in that there’s no disguising who he is. So that what I think ends up happening is that section of the movie and certainly that character, Cyborg, is a metaphor for being The Other. Which is why I’m glad it’s played by – that I’m playing dad and Victor is a black, young man. Because I think that is a metaphor in a certain way, that it is talking about what it means to be The Other” he added.

Finally, the 69-year-old ended by saying, “Even if you have something that you can contribute to society, very often society doesn’t view you that way. Because when you are The Other, the first response by the mainstream, if you will, is to ostracize.

“So I think that’s what Victor’s fears are. He has to figure out how to overcome before he then eventually becomes benevolent and understands that the powers that he has can be used for great good.”

WOW! So even though we will see some lightness and fun/ humour from Victor Stone due to these reshoots. Zack Snyder’s “dark” drama and deep thinking behind this character will still be in the movie.

So IGN’s interview and Morton’s comments show this film could be something special blending Snyder’s action sequences, the way it’s shot and characteristic symbolism with Whedon’s banter, flushing out character and “fun” should please everyone.

I’ve waited my whole young life to see the Justice League on the big screen and it’s finally happening and the fact we’re getting the strengths of both Snyder and Whedon is incredible.

Additionally, Morton added we’ll see Silas Stone in the solo Cyborg movie saying, “Oh, that’s the deal as far as I understand it, that Silas will defiantly be part of The Cyborg.

Justice League arrives in UK and US cinemas on November 17.
