Following the box office success of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros obviously greenlit a sequel and finding a new director has been a bit of an issue.

First, we heard rumours Mel Gibson and it looked likely as he revealed he spoke to WB bosses, but through discussions died down a few months ago. However, it did look like the studio did find their director in the form of Jaume Collet-Serra.

Even though nothing was confirmed, the Spanish director went to work with Dwayne Johnson to helm his upcoming Disney family adventure film Jungle Cruise.

Now it looks like Warner Bros and DC may finally have found their director as according to Variety, Gavin O’Connor is on board to write and direct the sequel of Suicide Squad.

This sequel is said to be “a top priority at Warner Bros” and it comes sense since it made $745 million at the worldwide box office plus I think the studio will want to use this film to prove to the world Suicide Squad can be a critical and commercial success.

According to the US websites sources, “It looks to be one of the two DC properties (the other being New Line’s “Shazam!”) to begin production next year. Given the ensemble’s busy schedule, the shoot wasn’t expected to start until fall (Autumn) of 2018.”

This gives both the studio and O’Connor plenty of time to get the script right and not rush like the handful of weeks David Ayer had for the original film.

The cast’s busy schedule is mainly down to Will Smith voicing the Genie in the live-action adaptation Aladdin that’s just begun filming.

I think O’Connor is a great choice for something like Suicide Squad 2. Movies like Warrior and The Accountant shows he can director a) a brilliant story and b) directs action pretty damn well.

If they give him plenty of time (which looks like they are) to get the script right and have a midlevel budget this film can be a decent success with everyone.

In the meantime let him direct The Accountant 2 with Ben Affleck.
