Golden Globes Nominations 2018 - Get Out Is A Comedy & No LEGO BATMAN!?

IMAGE VIA HOLLYWOOD FOREIGN PRESS ASSOCIATION

In the early hours of this morning (Monday 11th December) in Hollywood, the nominations were announced for the 2018 Golden Globes kicking off awards season and there were some surprising omissions and inclusions.

The Shape of Water, The Post, Lady Bird and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri were nominated multiple times.

The first surprise comes in the Best Picture in Comedy or Musicals and much like The Martian two years ago, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominate Jordan Peele’s smash-hit horror/thriller Get Out in this category. Yes, the Hollywood Foreign Press probably see this film as a family comedy.

Then for myself, I was shocked to see Stronger wasn’t nominated for any award especially Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany weren’t in the Best Actor and Best Actress.

However, well done Ridley Scott for getting the Best Director category after doing intensive reshoots in short time for All The Money In The World with Christopher Plummer (who replaced Kevin Spacey) pick up Supporting Actor.

Also, why weren’t Captain Underpants and/or LEGO Batman in the Best Animation? Granted, it wasn't the best year for animation and Pixar’s Coco will win the award, but both films are much better than Boss Baby and Ferdinand!

Elsewhere, there’s plenty of representation for British talent at the Globes. Joining Scott in the Best Director category is Christopher Nolan after his superb work on Dunkirk with the war film picking up three nominations including Best Picture. Additionally, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Daniel Day-Lewis is in the Best Actor race for Phantom Thread alongside Darkest Hour’s Gary Oldman. There were nods for Sally Hawkins for Best Actress (The Shape of Water), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul) and Helen Mirren (The Leisure Seeker).

Meanwhile, there’s an Irish contingent with Saoirse Ronan, receiving a nomination for her performance in Lady Bird, and Martin McDonagh will be the battle with Nolan and Scott for Best Director and Best Screenplay.
