Top 30 Most Anticipated Films Of 2018 Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of The Shaun Wren Blog’s 2018 most anticipated films of 2018. This time we’ll be focusing on numbers 20 down to 11 and as previously on Part 1 it’ll include the UK release dates.

20. Ocean’s 8 – Warner Bros (Friday 22nd June)

Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett star in this all-female heist sequel to Ocean’s 11 and it could be refreshing to see some of Hollywood’s best actresses starring.

It’ll be interesting to see how this does tie-in to George Clooney’s 2001 remake.

19. Mortal Engines – Universal (Friday 14th December)

Based off a Peter Jackson screenplay, this could be one of the most epic films and fill that Star Wars Christmas gap, but faces competition from Aquaman.

The plot sounds interesting with cities having to eat small towns to stay alive and the visuals look amazing.

18. Isle of Dogs – 20th Century Fox (Friday 20th March)

The latest Wes Anderson stop-motion adventure that looks very Wes Anderson with the trailers looking both strange and delightful.

The story is equally lovely with the film set in a future Japan and a young boy flying to an Isle full of dogs to recuse his pet. The animation looks incredible and the cast is star-studded with Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Murry providing their voices.

17. Johnny English 3 – Universal (Thursday 20th September)

The first two films were highly delightful and it’s great to see Rowan Atkinson returning to save the world and even Ben Miller (who didn’t appear in the sequel) makes a comeback. The film also has former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko appearing.

16. Tomb Raider – Warner Bros (Friday 16th March)

This will likely be this year’s King Arthur, with critics not liking the film but I’ll find highly enjoyable. To be honest it has an easy job of being better than the two previous Tomb Raider films.

Mainly because not only does it have Norwegian director Roar Uthang, who impressed with his disaster movie The Wave, but it’ll star Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander who’ll make a great Laura Croft. Plus, the film is based on the latest video game reboot so expect a decent origin story.

15. Wreck-It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks The Internet – Disney (Friday 30th November)

The first Wreck-It Ralph was an utterly joyful movie and it has the original band back together with Rich Moore, who picked up an Oscar for the superb Zootropolis, returning to helm the sequel (alongside Phil Johnston). The film is set six years after the original with Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) causing havoc with the internet.

This is the first Disney animated sequel to hit the big screen since 1990's The Rescuers Down Under and expect cameo from Disney’s princesses.

14. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald – Warner Bros (Friday 16th November)

The sequel to the entertaining Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Crimes of Grindelwald is set months later and see Jude Law’s Albus Dumbledore helping Newt (Eddie Redmayne) battle the dark wizard Grindelwald (Johnny Deep) and we’re going to see magic in Paris.

The cast, with plenty of returning faces, has me interested since I enjoyed the first film and I’m hoping this is the start of the series becoming more adult.

13. X-Men: Dark Phoenix – 20th Century Fox (Friday 2nd November)

I’ve never been a massive fan of Fox’s X-Men movies with only a handful I truly like. However, the young cast that was introduced in Apocalypse with the possibility of this being James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender’s last appearance as Professor X & Magneto is something to see. Plus, this could be a star turn for Sophie Turner as she’ll be the lead as Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix and with this being the first ever Sci-fi X-Men film it’s all very exciting.

12. Solo: A Star Wars Story – Disney (Friday 25th May)

Normally a Star Wars film would automatically get into the top 10! That’s how much love I have for these films. However, with all the behind-the-scenes drama with the sacking of Phil Lord & Chris Miller and having replacement director Ron Howard having massive reshoots (rumoured 90%) to handle it’s hard to get excited about the younger years of Han Solo, a film even Star Wars aren’t excited about.

The only positive thing going for it at the moment, until we see a trailer, is the brilliant casting of Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian.

11. Ready Player One – Warner Bros (Friday 30th March)

Not beating around the bush this film (like the book) is squarely focused on pop-culture nostalgia and plenty of YouTube videos throughout the year will be listing off every Easter egg in the film.

However, the book is incredibly popular and it has the iconic Steve Spielberg directing, the film is basically a treasure hunt set in a VR world on Earth in 2045.

It’ll have Alan Silvestri’s (the dude who created the Avengers theme) score and a decent cast of Tye Sheridan, Ben Mendelsohn, Oliva Cooke and Simon Pegg.
