At half past seven this morning (Tuesday 9th January) BAFTA announced the nominees for this year’s awards with The Shape of Water dominating revealing 12 nominations including Best Film, Best Director and in both Leading and Supporting Actress.

Meanwhile, The Darkest Hour (Best Film, Outstanding British Film) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Leading Actress and two in Supporting Actor) both collected nine nominations and they were just ahead of Dunkirk (Best Film & Best Director) and surprisingly Blade Runner 2049 (Best Director) received eight. I, Tonya picked up five (Leading and Supporting Actress), Phantom Thread and Call Me By Your Name each got four and finally, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, Lady Bird and Paddington 2 all picked up three nominations.
This year’s BAFTA’s does show we’re celebrating the best of British cinema and rightly so with Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya will be competing in the Leading Actor category with legends like Gary Oldman, who’s likely be the favourite for his outstanding portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour and Daniel Day-Lewis’s final performance in Phantom Thread.
Elsewhere, Hugh Grant got his well-deserved Supporting Actor nom for his wonderful performance in Paddington 2 and hopefully, we’ll see the final dance number as the opening for this year’s BAFTA.
Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan continue their dominates over the award season with both nominated in the Leading Actress for their performances in I, Tonya and Lady Bird respectfully.
It was a good to see British films like Gods Own Country, The Death of Starlin and Lady MacBeth getting some love although I was hoping to see Florence Pugh and Josh O’Connor in the Leading Actress/Actor categories.
After the nominees were announced, BAFTA revealed that Joanna Lumley will be taking over from Stephen Fry as host and she's the perfect choice.
I don’t feel like I need to explain the reasons, but just in case, Lumley makes perfect sense! She represents the country brilliantly, she’s funny and classy, I’m hoping her opening words will be, “Hello Darlings.”
