Cathy Yan To Direct Harley Quinn/Birds Of Prey Movie For DC Films

After a tweet last week that Warner Bros loved Christina Hodson's Birds of Prey script so much that they were looking for a director it looks like their search is over.

According to Deadline, Cathy Yan beat a number of well established male directors to be given the opportunity to helm this superhero project.

The US trade stated that Yan got the job because her “presentation for Birds of Prey was exceptional, and [Margot] Robbie held firm to her desire for this film to be directed by a woman.”

This deal means that Yan has become the third woman to handle DC Universe project joining Patty Jenkins, who is currently handling the sequel to her summer smash hit Wonder Woman and New Gods helmer Ava DuVernay.

The former Wall Street Journal reporter will also be the second Asian director following Aquaman’s James Wan and the first Asian female director to ever tapped to direct a superhero film.

Yan has only one film under her CV called Dead Pigs, which was shown at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to critical praise.

Due to the praise, she got for her work on this all-female team-up, Hodson was given the job of writing the script of Batgirl. This film will also be used to introduce the audience to Barbara Gordon/Batgirl before she goes off on her solo film similar to how both DC and Marvel introduced Wonder Woman and Black Panther respectively.

It has also been revealed this will be Robbie’s next project following competition of Quintin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which she’s currently negotiating to join alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt.

The hope is that this DC project can begin filming by the end of this year or early next year and it will be pushing back Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 to be next in line to start filming.

Personally, I’m completely fine with Suicide Squad 2 making way for Birds of Prey because to me it sounds like we could get a BoP vs Gotham City Sirens with Batgirl, Black Canary and Huntress looking for a runaway Harley Quinn who in turn teams up with Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

This sounds awesome to me, but I’m sure plenty of people will bitch about it.

Elsewhere, with Suicide Squad 2 being pushed back could be a good thing for a lot of people, O’Connor can focus on getting the script perfectly right, Will Smith can go a film Bad Boys 3 with Sony and Jared Leto can do a world tour of his new album with 30 Seconds to Mars.

Additionally, this film Birds of Prey movie could lead into Suicide Squad 2.
