Alfred Pennyworth Is Getting His Own TV Show

It was originally just a gag from the Teen Titans GO! To The Movies but what we and the team behind the animated film didn’t know is that this movie is, in fact, telling the future.

As it was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that Bruce Wayne/Batman’s guardian, butler and friend Alfred Pennyworth is getting a 10 episode, straight-to-order series from US TV station Epix.

The Batman prequel drama series is coming from the MGM owned premium cable network and will be coming from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller with the show being simple called PENNYWORTH.

THR unveiled some details about this project will revolve around Alfred Pennyworth and will not be a Gotham spin-off but instead focus on a new story on Alfred’s early life as a SAS soldier and forms a secret company with Thomas Wayne (Bruce’s billionaire father) in the 1960s London.

It’s also been confirmed that Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred in Gotham, WILL NOT be involved and with casting not yet begun and the series set in a completely different universe. Whoever comes in, and I’m guessing will be a younger actor somewhere around 25-years-old, joins an exclusive group of Alfred’s that include; Jeremy Irons, Michael Caine, Michael Gough, Alan Napier and William Austin.

Just like everyone else when this was announced I was like eh? but when thinking about it, this could be a cool series.

Think of it this way, this will be DC Entertainment’s own Agent Carter as I’m looking forward to seeing Alfred going into undercover missions during the early years of the Cold War and I’m guessing we’ll see World War II flashback.

The other reason why I think this might be a good idea is because of the Batman: The Animated Series season two episode, The Lion and the Unicorn. It focused on Alfred going back to London and we learnt a little bit about his past working for the secret service.

I’m sure people will complain and question the choice, but I’m interested and it’ll be interesting where this will end up on UK TV, but maybe something like Amazon Prime or Channel 5.
