For reason’s unknown Jake Gyllenhaal has decided to not wait around to get the call from Matt Reeves instead going to Marvel to play a second-rate Spider-Man villain.
The Sun newspaper broke the story yesterday, and was followed up by The Hollywood Reporter, that actor is in talks to play the classic Spidey villain, Mysterio in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

To give some brief background Quentin Beck was created in 1964 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and Beck use's his skills as a special effects expect to create illusions to commit crimes and fight Spider-Man under the name Mysterio.

It’s known that Gyllenhaal is a massive comic book fan and was close to playing Spider-Man in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 after Tobey Maguire injured his back during filming for 2003’s Seabiscuit, but Maguire was able to make a return for the 2004 sequel.
Meanwhile, Mysterio has always been a fan favourite to make a cinematic appearance and was close to being in Raimi’s original series with fans suggesting Bruce Campbell for the role of Beck.
Additionally, THR has revealed that Michael Keaton could make his return as Vulture in the sequel with all eyes pointing towards the Sinister Six becoming the antagonist of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Because as well as Vulture and Mysterio, in the post credit scene of Homecoming Vulture was approached by Mac Gargan aka Scorpion.

While this is all well and good and I’m glad to see Mysterio finally make it to the big screen, why the actual fuck would Gyllenhaal take up this role?
It seems incredibly odd as the Nightcrawler and Stronger actor could be considered for A-level heroes and villains like Iron Man, Captain America, Batman, Wolverine, Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, Joker, Riddler and if the role wasn’t taken by Tom Hardy, Venom.
I think many fans were expecting if/when Ben Affleck left the role of Bruce Wayne then Gyllenhaal was the next in line or even play the younger version of Affleck’s Batman in Reeves’ Dark Knight film.
The only thing I can see why he would even talk/take the role is to pass the time until he gets Warner Bros on the phone as Mysterio has to be a one-and-done bad guy. Plus Marvel boss, Kevin Feige is a massive comic book fanboy and I can’t see him stopping Gyllenhaal leaving the MCU if he was going to play Batman.
The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is to being filming this summer as it’ll kick off Phase 4 in the MCU picking up straight after where Avengers 4 ends with a release date of July 5, 2019.
