Summer Preview 2018

This week not only was it the Met Gala, but for us in the UK it was May Bank Holiday Monday (for those outside the UK, it’s a day off for a lot of people across Blighty) and it is hot as balls, it means the Summer is here. With that comes a lot of great movies to enjoy during this period of time.

Public service announcement! For everyone in the UK, we will be getting Ant-Man and the Wasp and Incredibles 2 a month later than the US due to the World Cup because not even Disney can stop the UK's love of watching England being shit at their national sport.

With that, here is The Shaun Wren Blog’s Summer Preview!

May

Deadpool 2 – 15th May (20th Century Fox)

The sequel to the worldwide smash hit, Deadpool 2 will see Ryan Reynolds suit up his red leather alter ego to take on Thanos himself Josh Brolin.

Expect wall breaks, jokes at DC and Marvel and with Atomic Blonde’s David Leitch helming this film, the action is going to be fucking awesome!

Deadpool 2 will also be known as The Birth of Peter!

Excitement Level – 9 (out of 10)

Solo: A Star Wars Story – 24th May (Disney)

After we were repeatedly told by film bloggers back in January this film was going to be moved to December, Happy Days’ Ron Howard said fucked that and worked hard to make sure it’ll be released in May.

Expect to see Aiden Ehrenreich make Solo his own as we see him meet Chewie, make the Kessel Run and become the scandal we loved after he shot Greedo in cold murder.

Donald Glover will also steal the film and make every woman and man weak in the knees as Lando Calrissian.

Excitement Level – 8

June

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – 6th June (Universal)

Jurassic World became one of the most surprising blockbusters of 2015 making over a billion dollars worldwide. So it makes sense a sequel would happen.

See a return of Jeff Goldblum and many dinosaurs, J.A. Bayona also states this will have elements of horror starring Chris Pratt.

The wonderful Toby Jones will also star in the sequel.

Excitement Level – 6

The Happy Prince – 15th June (Lionsgate)

This could be a film we see Rupert Everett be a contender for a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Oscar Wilde.

The film might be forgotten or missed by the general public but the trailer for the film looks great and hopefully find an audience.

Excitement Level – 6

Oceans 8 – 22nd June (Warner Bros)

The Oceans are back with Sandra Bullock bringing a gang together to heist the Met Gala.

Bullock is joined by Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna and Helen Bonham Carter.

It looks like a fun blockbuster and it’s going to be great to see Bullock and Blanchett on screen together and we might get cameos from George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.

Excitement Level – 7

Sicario: Day of the Soldado – 29th June (Lionsgate)

This film has had so many different titles that it makes you wonder why the original Sicario needed a sequel and the trailer still doesn’t answer the question.

Day of the Soldado will be the third film starring Brolin within three months.

Expect an action film that might make you think or we could be left still wondering why Sicario has a sequel.

Excitement Level – 5

July

Mary Shelly – 6th July (Curzon Artifical Eye)

Starring Elle Fanning and Douglas Booth this could be a film very similar to Crimson Peak, a period gothic romance but without the horror elements.

Similar to The Happy Prince this film could and likely will be forgotten and become a Netflix or Amazon catch up film. However, both Fanning and Booth look like they have great performances to be seen.

Excitement Level – 7

Tag – 6th July (Warner Bros)

Warner Bros’ Tag will be the film to take over nationwide cinemas that week.

The main reason is this comedy about adults playing tag looks like a fun time at the movies and then you have the likes of Jon Ham and Jeremy Renner this film has the star power.

Additionally, the success of Game Night, WB could make a franchise of adults playing kids games.

Excitement Level – 7

Terminal – 6th July (Arrow Films)

I highly doubt this movie will be any god however with Margot Robbie starring as a killer and then you have Simon Pegg, Dexter Fletcher and a small cameo from Mike Myers it could be a decent indie film.

Will likely be a Netflix or Amazon catch up film.

Excitement Level – 5

The First Purge – 6th July (Universal)

We’re returning to how the Purge became a thing.

The original film was a horror and it became more an action franchise with Frank Grillo. It looks like this prequel will have both those elements with a young cast that could become breakout stars.

Excitement Level – 6

The Incredibles 2 – 13th July (Disney)

It took 14 years and me getting into my mid 20’s but we finally got a sequel to the Incredibles and it hasn’t stopped me being this excited.

What else can I add because we’re all going to see The Incredibles 2!

Excitement Level – 10

Skyscraper – 13th July (Universal)

Dwayne Johnson has called this film an original idea from director Rawson Marshall Thurber, but it does very much looks like Die Hard meets the Towering Inferno.

Between this and Rampage, Skyscraper has the better chance of being a success as an entertaining, fun action film.

I love The Rock and like to watch him kicking ass and taking names.

Excitement Level – 6

Hotel Artemis – 20th July (Warner Bros)

This film has come out of nowhere to be one to see.

Warner Bros are focusing on an interesting idea of where do criminals go to get better without getting arrested?

I could see this being this year’s John Wick as a badass action film.

Excitement Level – 7

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! – 20th July (Universal)

I didn’t and still don’t want to see the original film, but the reason why it’s on my list is that of Lily James and it’s going to be a big hit with female audiences and ABBA fans.

Again, it just looks like a fun time at the movies and singing along to classic songs.

Excitement Level –5

Mission: Impossible – Fallout – 26th July (Paramount)

I’m predicting this film will be in the top three of this summer worldwide box office as Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct the sequel to Rogue Nation.

This also could overtake Rogue Nation as the best M: I franchise with the story looking much darker and additionally, this could be the massive hit that will be beneficial for Henry Cavill’s career away from Superman.

Plus, we can see why his moustache was such a must that WB had to digitally remove it.

Excitement Level – 10

August

Ant-Man and the Wasp – 3rd August (Disney)

This is the perfect film to follow Infinity War and bring all of us back to the real MCU world and just enjoy it.

Ant-Man for a lot of people is the best film Marvel has released and this sequel could replace that with the addition of Wasp.

The action looks enjoyable and the latest trailer just looks so much fun!

Excitement Level – 7

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies – 3rd August (Warner Bros)

This film is 100% aimed at kids and fans who love this version of the characters and to be honest the teaser didn’t get me excited.

However, the recent trailer did make me laugh and I’m such DCEU fans will enjoy it too as the can watch it get roasted in a playful way.

Excitement Level – 6

The Meg – 10th August (Warner Bros)

IT’S JASON STATHAM FIGHTING A FUCKING GIANT SHARK!!!!

Excitement Level – 9

Crazy Rich Asians – 17th August (Warner Bros)

I’m predicting Crazy Rich Asians will be the dark horse success of the summer and be a massive hit with audiences.

Mainly because everyone loves a rom-com and we can’t deny the cultural importance of having an all Asian cast for the Asian community.

Plus, this could be a major breakout for some of the stars of the film.

Excitement Level – 8

Disney’s Christopher Robin – 17th August (Disney)

This film could easily break my heart and I don’t know why they’re getting so much hate but I like how Winnie the Pooh and his friends look!

All we know so far is that Winnie unites with Christopher who is now an adult.

Excitement Level – 6

The Equalizer 2 – 17th August (Sony Pictures)

This is the summer of the action film and it continues with Denzel Washington returning as the ever lovable Robert McCall as he delivers his own brand of justice. However, how far will he go when it’s for someone he loved.

Antoine Fuqua also returns to direct following the success of the original film.

Watching Denzel getting his Liam Neeson on sells this movie all on by itself.

Excitement Level – 6

The Spy Who Dumped Me – 22nd August (Lionsgate)

It’s hard to say how well this film does with critics and audiences alike, but you have the likes of Kate McKinnon, who is slowly becoming one of the top female comedy talents, and this could be a major boost to her career.

The idea looks interesting and it could play like Melissa McCarthy’s 2015 comedic hit Spy and as we die down from the blockbusters the film has a chance to do well.

Excitement Level – 5

The Happytime Murders – 24th August (STX International)

In the Henson Company’s big screen return a cast of puppets from a beloved 80s TV show begin to be murdered one-by-one and it’s down to two detectives to solve the case.

This film is a big deal as we get the return of the Henson company in an adult comedy and with McCarthy on board it could be a success too.

Excitement Level – 7

September

Kids are going back to school, but that won’t stop Hollywood release the final few Summer films before Autumn and the Oscar calibre movies come our way.

The Nun – 7th September (Warner Bros)

IT was such a huge success for Warner Bros/New Line Cinema that they’re making sure you’ll end your Summer shitting yourself once again. This time in the form of the second spin-off from The Conjuring universe.

I am no fan of horror films and when I saw Conjuring 2 the Nan was utterly terrifying and I’m sure Corin Hardy will bring the scares and audiences and horror fans alike will love it.

IMAGE VIA WARNER BROS/ NEW LINE

Additionally, if this film is a success I won’t be surprised if we hear news Hardy has been attached to helm the Justice League Dark film.

Excitement Levels – 2

The Predator  - 13th September (20th Century Fox)

It’s hard to build this up as the last blockbuster of the summer because for many of us we either haven’t seen the original Predator or it hasn’t held dear to us like kids and teenagers of the 80s.

The thing the film has got going to itself is Shane Black is directing and I’m sure he’ll be bringing the action with some jump scares.

Excitement Level – 4

Fighting With My Family – 28th September (Lionsgate)

For wrestling fans, this is the film to see this summer as it focuses the early career of WWE superstar Paige.

Additionally, this could be a brilliant underdog sports comedy similar to Eddie the Eagle, plus the wonderfully talented Florence Pugh stars as Paige and the cast is full of British talent like Jack Lowden (Dunkirk), Nick Frost, Lena Headley.

Then you have Vince Vaughn (rumoured to be Jack “The Snake’ Roberts) and Dwayne Johnson stars in his third and final film of 2018.

Excitement Level – 8

Night School – 28th September (Universal)

The close summer movie season is this comedy starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish.

The film looks great from the trailers and with Hart and Haddish, which sounds like a P.I company, this could be the comedy of 2018.
