Sadly Zendaya Isn't Mary Jane, But She Did Give Some Details About Her Spider-Man: Homecoming Character

This summer, social media blew up as The Wrap was reporting Zendaya’s actual character in Spider-Man: Homecoming was the infamous Mary Jane Watson.

The rumour should’ve always been taken with a pinch of salt, but if true, I personally didn’t have a problem. She’s gorgeous, seemingly had good chemistry with Tom Holland (who’s playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man) and could easily rock the red hair.

Anyway, whilst talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress has now debunked those rumours.

“People are going to react over anything,” she said, “But nothing (about who she is playing) is fact. It’s like, you guys are just making shit up at this point and then reacting to it. Whenever we were on set, one of us gets some random character name (on the call sheet).

“(Bloggers were) like, ‘Oh they must be so and so.’ And we just crack up about it, because it’s like, ‘Whatever you want to think. You’ll find it.’ It’s a funny game” added Zendaya.

After ruling out playing MJ, she was able to give some details about her character.

“My character is not romantic,” denying she’s a love interest of Peter Parker’s in Homecoming.

The 20-year-old added “My character is like very dry, awkward, intellectual and because she is so smart, she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people, like, ‘My brain is so far ahead of you that you’re just not on my level.’ So she comes off very weird. But to me, she is very cool because she’s deep. She’s always thinking about something, always reading.”

With these new details, I think we can slightly rule out she’s MJ even more unless this version of Mary Jane Watson is significantly different in Homecoming from whatever we’ve seen before.

You'll be able to find out who Zendaya's character will be when Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into UK cinemas 7th July 2017.
