As Wonder Woman set to take the world by storm and Captain Marvel is in pre-production, Sony wanted in the female led directing superhero game.

According to Deadline, Beyond the Lights helmer Gina Prince-Bythewood will be taking on the Spider-Man spinoff Silver and Black.

No one has details on the story, but it’ll centre on mercenary Silver Sable and expect burglar Black Cat, both allies and enemies of Spidey for years, but they’ve both been at their most popular as anti-heroes pursing true crime and villains outside of the law.

Prince-Bythewood will be reworking an original script written by Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok).
Much like Tom Hardy’s Venom, Silver and Black won’t be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has Spider-Man but instead is a part of this Spiderless Sony Marvel Universe.

Prince-Bythewood recently directed the plot for Marvel’s upcoming series Cloak & Dagger.

I’m all for studios wanting to tell different Marvel stories, however, I don’t know how this can be a film. Unlikely Hardy’s Venom, I think you need Spider-Man as some sort of plot device for these two characters to meet.

On the other hand, Sony and Prince-Bythewood may have a cool, kick-ass, fun story they can tell with these characters that deserve to be told. However, like the Hardy casting, Sony need to get two well-known/semi-known names in these roles to have any chance to get some positive buzz.
