Yesterday was a big news day for X-Men Universe spinoff New Mutants. As popular actress within the Marvel world is coming on board, what the tone will be and a rumoured casting of one of the mutants.

The biggest news was The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Rosario Dawson is in talks with 20th Century Fox to join the X-Men spinoff in a key role.

If the deal is signed, slide and delivered, Dawson will be playing Dr Cecilia Reyes – a mutant able to generate energy fields – and she is seen as a mentor to these young mutants.

The 38-year-old is no stranger to the comic book/superhero world as she voiced Batgirl this year in Warner Bros and DC’s LEGO Batman and is a major important character in the Marvel Netflix Universe as nurse turned crimefighter Clare Temple.

We have gotten to know Claire since season one of Daredevil all the way through Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and recently Iron Fist.

Dawson has also appeared in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City.

With the inclusion of Dr Reyes, she will be filling the traditional role played by Professor X in the comics and as it was revealed James McAvoy won’t be appearing in the film.

This seems like a decent fit for Dawson as it looks more likely her character will be killed off in Netflix’s The Defenders and she does well in those leader/mentor roles.

If she does join she’ll be starring alongside Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and 21-year-old Anya Taylor-Joy playing Illyana Rasputin aka Magik. According to IGN, 13 Reasons Why star Henry Zaga is also set to join New Mutants as mutant Sunspot.

Meanwhile, with the cast slowly coming together, director Josh Boone spoke to Entertainment Weekly and revealed New Mutants will be going into somewhere completely different to previous X-Men/ comic book films.

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different” said Boone.

The main reason for Boone to go in this direction is down to artists Bill Sienkiewicz’s work on New Mutants issue #18, which Boone describes as “surreal and impressionistic X-Men series” that felt “like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”

Boone went on to praise his employer and the studio’s interest in making these X-Men spinoff’s different, adding, “We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can.”

Even though Boone says the film will be “full-fledged horror” it will be a PG-13/12A version on horror and even though I’m not a fan of the genre, I want to see this film because it sounds exciting and different.

New Mutants is set to be released in cinemas on April 13, 2018.
