Welcome to a world of Gods and Monsters as Universal officially revealed the name of their cinematic universe and now it’ll be called Dark Universe.
In the announcement, Bill Condon will be directing the next film in this universe, Bride of Frankenstein. Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem have joined the Dark Universe playing The Invisible Man and Frankenstein’s Monster.
They join Crowe as Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde, Tom Cruise as soldier “Nick Morton” and Sofia Boutella as The Mummy.

As well as an official logo, a motion logo was also unveiled, which embeds clips from the classic Universal monster films and features a brand new musical theme composed by four-time Oscar nominee Danny Elfman and this will be premiered in front of The Mummy.
Universal are following in the footsteps of Marvel Studios and Warner Bros’ DCEU by bringing these iconic characters to today’s audiences.
The Dark Universe began from a core of creatives including The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman, Chris Morgan (writer/producer of the Fast & Furious franchise), Oscar winner Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation) and David Koepp (Jurassic Park).
Kurtzman and Morgan spoke about why they decided to take on this retelling of classic characters.
“When Universal approached us with the idea of reimagining these classic characters, we recognised the responsibility of respecting their legacy while bringing them into new and modern adventures,” said Kurtzman and Morgan.
“The studio and our fellow creative collaborators have championed and challenged us as we’ve begun to spin the web of Dark Universe. It’s our hope these movies will engross longtime fans and spark the imaginations of brand-new ones.”
Joining the announcement of Dark Universe is Universal confirming Oscar winner and director of the worldwide mega smash hit Beauty and the Beast, Condon will be directing Bride of Frankenstein (screenplay by Koepp) and will be revealing who’ll be his leading actress soon.
Bride of Frankenstein will be the next film in the Dark Universe and has a release date of Thursday 14h February 2019 aka Valentine’s Day, which is a smart idea and ideal release date.
Condon talked about his excitement helming this film saying “I’ve very excited to bring a new Bride of Frankenstein to life on screen, particularly since James Whale’s original creation is still so potent.
“The Bride of Frankenstein remains the most iconic female monster in film history, and that’s a testament to Whale’s masterpiece – which endures as one of the greatest movies ever made” stated Condon.
So how will this Dark Universe be interconnected? They will be connected by a mysterious multi-national known as Prodigium. “Led by the enigmatic and brilliant Dr Henry Jekyll (Crowe), Prodigium’s mission is to track, study and – when necessary – destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world.
“Working outside the aegis of any government, and with practices concealed by millennia of secrecy, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilised society… and will go to any length to contain it.”

I’m excited and interested about this Dark Universe and the talent Universal want to get involved both in front and behind the camera. Hopefully, they get the right blend of action for modern day film fans and the horror elements for fans of these classic films.
However, I do think (despite having mega stars and talent like Cruise and Crowe) I can’t see The Mummy making a billion worldwide, I think a $600-$800 million worldwide box office will make everyone at the studio very happy.
