Tom Hardy To Star As Venom & Why Not Being In The MCU Is For The Best

Out of the blue on Friday Sony announced that their upcoming Venom movie will be starring Tom Hardy and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will be helming.

This news changed a lot of minds on this movie as Hardy is a top Hollywood and the potential of him in this role have gotten people at most excited and at least interested.

Before the casting, I was always interested in this film and what they might do with it. Now with The Hollywood Reporter revealed this will be the launching point for Sony’s own Marvel Spider-Man based universe.

I think this is when it gets really interesting as I don’t want to see Venom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe mainly because they don’t have the place in their schedule, also Marvel Studios would NEVER do a film based on villains and make a film that isn’t Disney safe PG/PG-13.

With the rumour being this film will be an R-rated horror, this is the perfect way to say welcome to the Sony Spidey Marvel Cinematic Universe! Getting an actor of Hardy’s level, who was Oscar nominated for The Revenant, shows not only the studio is serious, but also this story/script must be decent to get his attention.

The only other info we know is Hardy will be playing Eddie Brock (the first Venom) and that this is one of Sony’s top priories and the movie is set for an October 5, 2018, release.

What also helps is Hardy is a fan of the character.

So how will this fit in with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man? At this moment no one knows, but the fact this Peter Parker is connected to the MCU does make it a little unlikely of him being a part as they’d be a lot of explaining to why Iron Man or The Hulk isn’t involved.

So best bet at the moment is this universe hasn’t got a Spidey, which will mean we’ll probably see a different origin of Brock getting the alien symbiote and I’m fine with that.

The important thing is they keep the R-rating horror element because having something alien growing all over your body, taking it over and changing you is horrific. The Spider-Man 3 portrayal by Topher Grace wasn’t the best.

The story is being kept under wraps, but I’d like to see Brock being an investigator reporter of The Daily Bugle reporting on a string of murders including a scientist and when he goes to investigate that’s when he gets affected with the symbiote.

From there, using his new powers, he has to hunt down serial killer Cletus Kasady. At the end of the film, you can see a bit of the alien symbiote drop onto a fresh cut and watch Kasady be taken to prison.

From there you can build towards a sequel where you’ll see Kasady turn into Carnage wanting revenge on Brock/Venom.

It’s not only Venom Sony is pushing, but they’re also working on a Black Cat/Silver Sable film and I wouldn’t be surprised if we do get a live action Spidey down the line, maybe Miles Morales’ Spider-Man, Spider-Woman and I think some fans would be interested in a Spider-Gwen.

Whatever happens, this Sony Venom film is a good thing for comic book fans as much like Fox having X-Men and Fantastic Four it means we have more choice to have these stories told because if the X-Men were in the MCU we wouldn’t have gotten Deadpool or Logan.

So even though I’m not a fan of the genre, having an R-rated horror Venom movie is great news for superhero films.
