When the first season of Supergirl come out it was a little bit of a letdown. It was nothing to do with Melissa Beniot’s wonderful performance, it was just the stories and the script and moving to its natural home alongside The Flash, Arrow and Legends under their DCTV banner at US network The CW.
After leaving as Cat Grant’s assistant to follow her cousin to become a journalist, Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) still works with the DEO alongside Hank Henshaw/Martian Manhunter (Dave Harewood) and her adoptive sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) as Supergirl. Along the way, she’ll work with her Kryptonian cousin Kal El/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to battle new DC Super-villains both terrestrial and extraterrestrial.

In this DCTV/Arrowverse, Supergirl has become one of the best shows in this established universe and once again it’s because of Benoist performance bringing the strength and hope the show and character needs and deserve. She brings so much of Christopher Reeves’ Superman and joy.
Quickly speaking of Superman, Hoechlin does a fine job and I’m sure a lot of people think he’s what they see and want in the Man of Steel. However, he’s not my Supes with Henry Cavill bringing what I want in the character.

However, it’s not about him and this season isn’t always about the Girl of Steel either. It’s about the team with so much character development and superb storytelling. Alex’s becoming openly gay and dealing with her relationship like a heterosexual relationship, yes it’s that simple.
Elsewhere, J’onn J’onzz/Henshaw/Martian Manhunter deals with acceptance and become part of a family. James Olsen (Brooks) grows to become what it means to be a hero and that also goes for Supergirl as she’s still learning to become a hero while also maturing.
Even with these big themes, the show still knows to have fun and inject humour when needed and that comes in the form of Mon-El (Woods).
The biggest surprise that came to me was the music by Blake Neely and how powerful and stand out each piece is in every episode.
Seeing Kara working alongside other members of the Arrowverse the mega crossover event and I enjoy the musical episodes with The Flash. Seeing Easter eggs from title names, props like Lex Luther's warsuit and past characters from Superman TV shows is always great.

However, I still think 22 episodes is way too much and think to reduce them to 13/15 season episodes will just tighten everything up.
Verdict
A superb season with brilliant performances and storylines. Fingers crossed the Season three curse won’t affect this continuing improving show.
