Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different. Ben (Fegley) longs for the father he has never known, while Rose (Simmonds) dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his home and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing that unfold with mesmerising symmetry.
To be honest I wasn't sure what I was going to expect from Todd Haynes' latest film Wonderstruck but I didn't think it'd be an ok(ish) film that's overall slightly shit.

The issues start from the beginning when they split the film into two parts between 1977 America and 1927 America. Making the separate periods feel different with the 70s in colour and sound, the 20s were black and white and silent.
It was massively confusing and I didn't know what the hell was going on. This reason alone made the film just feel shit and it doesn't help that it's so dull. This went for over an hour, which felt like a lifetime.

The only thing that becomes interesting was Rose’s story in the 20s and it was getting better to the point I’d prefer to watch her story compared to Ben’s story in 70s and the music used was decent for both time periods.
The main reason I preferred Rose was she was a likeable kid and you were rooting for her. Whereas Ben is just a pain in the arse, plus you can help but want to tell him to get a haircut!

The final 40(ish) minutes actually got better as the story starts to pick up the pace, but the first two acts just killed the film.
The performances were fine mainly coming from Julianne Moore in the final act and Simmonds.
Verdict
A film that's just a bit shit.
