It’s here! After over a year and a few news stories and with Zack Snyder stepping down due to a family tragedy, Justice League is going to be hitting cinemas this week and I could’ve have left the cinema with a bigger childish smile.

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s (Cavill) selfless act, Bruce Wayne (Affleck) enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince (Gadot), to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against newly awakened treat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes – Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman (Momoa), Cyborg (Fisher) and The Flash (Miller) – it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

I fucking love Justice League. From the opening scene with Batman it felt like I was a kid again watching Batman: The Animated Series and from there when the League comes together it was like watching that animated series. The only thing that was missing was a bowl of Coco-pops.

The best thing about the film is our heroes and how they interact with witty dialogue and you can pick a pair and they banter off each other really well, especially Affleck and Irons. However, the League doesn’t gel and get along right away, they have issues that aren’t really solved throughout the film. Some of the strongest acting between characters is between Affleck and Gadot with two scenes popping into my head.

What the film also does well elsewhere is introducing us to the newest DC heroes, Momoa looks pissed off all the time and his surfer dude, bro, lad Aquaman works in this universe and film and it increases the anticipation for his solo outing. Miller was brilliant as Barry Allen and nearly steals the film if it wasn’t for newcomer Fisher, who is a star in the making with this superb performance (you won’t believe this is his first big-screen role).

Briefly, on Superman, this is the character fans have been wanting to see since Man of Steel and normally I don’t like that vision of the character, but seeing Cavill’s Superman grow throughout these movies makes it a more natural progression.

However, I can’t deny the CGI on Cavill’s upper lip is an issue and for a minute is distracting, but you can move past it has it’s not a massive issue. Just staying with Supes for a second, I sort of wish his story was a little longer.

Furthermore, the runtime isn’t a major problem, it’s quick paced but it’s never ahead of itself and you can stay with the beat. However, I just think it just needed an added 10-20 minutes just to help with story and let the film breathe.

Directing wise, Snyder has done a brilliant job and can look back with pride how he closed off his trilogy and hope Warner Bros releases an ultimate/extended cut. I’ll happily welcome him back to any film especially Flash.

Meanwhile, the biggest issue this film has is the CGI and there’s a lot of it. Its fine for the first two acts but it goes too OTT in the final act and it has to be said Steppenwolf is an utterly shit villain.

Again, it’s ok because, besides a handful, all superhero villains are crap and this film focuses more on the heroes. The reasons why Steppenwolf is so shit is because the CGI is so bad in parts it’s like a PS2/early Xbox 360 game. It’s a massive shame because Ciaran Hinds’ voice is pretty menacing just his voice and body is shit, they should’ve made it practical and look like he has in the comics.

Apart from those, I had an utterly fantastic time and there are some awesome surprise moments and stay for BOTH CREDITS SCENES! I CAN’T STRESS THIS ENOUGH! I couldn’t get more excited and it shows the DCEU’s future is bright.

Verdict

It’s the animated Justice League come to life! It’s the most entertaining superhero film to come from the DCEU with excellent performances from the League members.
