This week has been a massive week for DC Films from Geoff Johns’ new role, Wonder Woman 1984 begun filming and now we’re getting wet with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman.
As for yesterday (Thursday 14th June) we got our first look utterly awesome images from the DC superhero flick. These included Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s half-brother King Orm, Aquaman mentor Vulko (Willem Dafoe) and Nicole Kidman’s Queen Atlanna.
The images came from Entertainment Weekly and the magazine sat down with the film’s director James Wan in what will possibly the biggest gamble Warner Bros and DC have done yet.

However, in Wan we trust and we’re going to see something we have seen on the big screen as we’re going underwater.
“The water world my movie takes place in is so separate and so far apart from previous DC movies it’s like I’m making my own sci-fi fantasy film,” Wan told EW.
“This is a whole new underwater world nobody has seen before.”
The things we could be seeing is Atlanteans riding sea creatures from white sharks, giant octopi and Aquaman riding a fucking sea dragon! This is a Wan’s take on often joke meme and gif of Aquaman riding a seahorse from the Super Friends cartoon.

If the last moments of the trailer is Momoa on a sea dragon I’m going to most likely shit myself.
Meanwhile, that’s not all as we’ll visit several different underwater kingdoms and the trench-dwelling cannibals.

This alone sounds like we’ll be getting horror that made Wan a worldwide respected director while also bringing something new and exciting to major blockbuster adventure films.
Elsewhere, we got our first look of Black Manta as Abdul-Mateen will be playing David Kane and this is a change from the comics as the character is called David Hyde.
In the image we see the villain working on this helmet and EW states this is only a “prototype” and Wan goes on to describe the character.

“He’s part mercenary but full-time pirate who in his suit look like some crazy alien from outer space.”
Wan then stated Black Manta won’t be the main villain of the film but is “a really interesting character who is somehow factored into this story but our main story is about Jason and Patrick.”
Speaking of Patrick Wilson, he’ll be playing Arthur Curry’s “ambitious” half-brother Orm “who wants to declare war on the surface world” and this is a great image because the film version of Ocean Master is different from the comic/animated version of the character.

Instead, Wilson looks more like the classic image of what Arthur Curry use to be with the clean-cut, blonde hair look opposite what Curry looks now in Momoa and honestly the Game of Thrones star has made the character’s look better with the Samoan heritage.
It’s just a cool mirrored look and works really well, but seriously does he need that pissing top knot?
Orm isn’t the only one with this stupid hairstyle as it’s looking like the look Wan is going with the Atlanteans as Aquaman’s mentor Vulko (played by Dafoe) has one.

In the case of Amber Heard’s Mera, she looks fantastic and I’m loving the bright red of her hair and I’m sure it’ll be tone down a bit as it’s probably easier and looks more realistic to tone down the brightness than to brighten something that was darker.
Furthermore, I’m loving how Mera looks to be in control of the images we’ve seen. In the image with Vulko, she’s standing upright and royally as Aquaman is talking and then in the image below Arthur is looking at Mera to know what to do next as she’s leading the way as they “embark on a quest on the surface world.”

Finally, while the cover featuring Kidman as Queen Atlanna looks a bit too photoshopped, the Oscar winner looks beautiful in the image of Atlanna protecting young Arthur.

So what about Aquaman himself Momoa producer Peter Safran believes the leading man could be the biggest surprises as no one has ever match the humour filled performance more perfectly on the big screen.
“Rarely has a superhero character been married to the real-life actor as much as Aquaman and Jason Momoa” declared Safran. “He’s authentically from two worlds, he’s this real physical specimen, he’s got the humor which he’s never been allowed to play before – in every regard he is Aquaman.”

I’m sure we’ll learn more as it looks like film websites and bloggers are about to post their reports from their set visit, plus more news from EW and there are rumours we could be seeing a teaser trailer at some point this weekend.

Whatever happens, I can’t wait for the film to open here in the UK on December 14 and US has to wait until December 21.
